Thoughts on the latest mission trip

Let the peoples praise you, O God;

let all the peoples praise you!

(Psalm 67:5 ESV)

This past Tuesday a group with Psalm 67 Missions Network returned back to the St. Louis area after spending a week ministering to those along the Rio Grande Valley. We were so blessed by this opportunity as I believe in many ways the Lord, as always, uses these opportunities to bring challenge, encouragement, and clarification to the lives of His people.

What exactly was done in the Valley? Well, this is always a trick question because we are tempted to think "look for the bottom line", which is impossible to do when we consider this type of work. However, here are some highlights.

Six people attended this short-term trip. We were able to drive the entire way without stopping over on the way there. (We did stay over on the way back).
Billy Jackson was able to capture some great pics and take some interview video of the area and has been making these available to all of us. This will help us continue to tell the story. See his page for more information.
I was able to preach three different times at two different congregations. One day Rick ministered through music for a group of Winter Texans. I preached a message on Matthew 13:44 to the same group on another day.

Each night, including adults, we had about 70-75 or so people in attendance! Our study was over "Things Hidden" an evangelistic study of Kingdom Parables, by Children Desiring God. We had classes for each age group.
We were able to use previously stored supplies that we keep in Psalm 67's storage unit. This provided a monetary savings.
We were able to get caught near a high-speed chase involving helicopters, and multiple police agencies.
Books donated by Desiring God ministries were provided to Pastors in Tamaulipas, Mexico. Books donated by Iglesia Maranata in Granite City, Illinois, were provided to congregations on the United States side of the border. Some of the books include a large case of "The Pilgrim's Progress" in Spanish.
We grew in love and unity with our brothers and sisters at Cristo el Rey, and along the US/Mexico border.
The Lord used humor by our mistakes to bring about closer relationships with some of the people! This seems to be a common happening!

There is so much more to share. I am so thankful to all of you who went and to those of you who held the rope! I'm so thankful for my dear wife and daughter and the fact that they put up with me and love me! We couldn't have made it without you! May the Lord be glorified in His church. May His Kingdom come and His will be done!

How is life?

You may read later on and think to yourself "what in the world does this passage have to do with the title of this post." Well, read the passage and then keep reading and hopefully you will see the connection.

And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

(Matthew 9:10-13 ESV)

There are a few points in this text that will be considered today. As in all observations, none of them can be exhaustive, but perhaps you would be blessed by thinking on a couple of things.

Friend, how is your life? You may be surprised to find out that the very people whom the Lord Jesus Christ sought were those whose life was a wreck. That's right, if you read through the Bible you will find out that those people that were most hated by the "religious" people were those with whom Jesus and his followers spent much time. In fact, they spent so much time with them that it lead to people hating them and questioning their "spirituality" that they would associate with people "like that."

You may be thinking "what in the world does this have to do with anything." Please allow me to ask you a question again..."how is your life going?" Do you find yourself miserable? Are you longing for "something" but you just don't know what. Do you find yourself without "hope." Or if you have "hope" you have no reason for why you have "hope" and at times life just seems to be "hopeless." Let me ask you this, do you belong with the crows that the religious people "hate." Then let me tell you that there is great hope in Jesus Christ. Notice, that the Lord did not call people to continue in their despair or current lifestyle, but He brought them out of where they were and gave them new life in Him. It would be a joy to talk to you more about this, to answer questions, to pray with you, or to point you to others who can do the same thing. The most important thing, is that you and I both are pointed to Jesus Christ.

Update on Missions

Also, I would like to encourage others to post testimonies from last week's trip to Tamaulipus, Mexico. Here are some points that I pray will be encouraging and challenging to you.

Ubaldo, a nine year old young man from the village, approached one of our team members expressing a desire to know Christ. This brother was then able to share with him and believes that Ubaldo was saved.
During the medical clinic many were served, hopefully Stephanie will be able to post a more comprehensive testimony soon.
This past trip we had several in attendance for times of preaching and singing.
We received an invitation to preach at a congregation in a small village that is near Valle Hermoso (town near the boarder).

Please continue to pray as we seek the Lord's direction in this mission as well as future mission endeavors.

Goodmorning all!

Sorry I haven't been able to make many updates. I'm not getting much information from Aaron because for some reason, there is no cell service this time around. That means he also can't send pics, so I guess we'll have to wait for those until everyone gets home!

Aaron was able to call yesterday afternoon when they went into another village. He said that they are still seeing many, many more people showing up for times of worship than what they expected. Also, last night they were invited to a Quincinera. For those of you who don't already know, it is a huge celebration, similar to a sweet 16, but in order to celebrate sweet 15. The whole village was planning to attend, and they were invited. I'm sure they had a great time, but above all, this was a great time to keep on building relationships with the locals. Praise the Lord!

Twitter only allows me to enter the tiniest bit of info, so I hope no one minds having to read updates here.

For those of you who haven't heard, there was one major issue after the next before they ever reached the border Wednesday morning! Upon arrival at the hotel, they found out that the rooms were not ready, the van was not ready, etc., etc. Oh and this was on top of the fact that Kimmy and Amber were stuck in Houston trying to get a passport for Kimmy! Most of the drama was worked out. Unfortunately, after waiting for several hours Wednesday morning, Enterprise STILL had not fixed our van issue. Instead of a 15 passenger van, they gave us a 12 passenger. Now, let me remind you that there are 12 people, all of their luggage, 2 huge coolers, medical supplies, sound system......... I'm just sayin, the border patrol probably got a good laugh seeing them roll through that loaded down! I'm giggling just thinking about it! And the whole time, I"m sure Mrs. Weber is smiling and saying GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME!!!

They have seen a great turnout thus far. Many from the village, adults & children alike have come for "VBS." Aaron said that the women's Bible study is going especially well with a greater turnout than they expected. Please especially rememer Amber as she is leading this study. Pray that the Lord would speak through her that many might be saved. And that she would build strong, deep relationships with some of these women that she will spend the next month with. That the Lord would bring trust between them, and that they might see and desire a relationship with Christ! That through discipleship many might be SAVED!!!!!

WOW! I was just thinking about how awesome it would be to Baptize at least 10 in November!

Thursday night, a few people from another village came to town. Praise the Lord, they are Christians from another village, and were there to share the Gospel! Our team led an evening time of Worship with singing and preaching, and plan to do it all again tonight! After the service, Aaron was able to speak with the pastor from the other village. He said that he has been praying for training and discipleship. When he became a Christian, he was "thrown" into the position of pastor, and having no biblical education, no training, no nothing but love for the Lord, he was a little frazzled. He asked if Aaron would come to their village and preach in November, and is wanting to be involved in the pastor training that they will be doing. Aaron was able to give him a copy of God is the Gospel, by John Piper. He just wants to learn learn learn! What a JOY! Thank you Lord!

Well, I guess that's all for now. I'm certainly missing my hubby. And let me tell ya, Olivia is sooo missing her daddy! This morning she came up to the foot of my bed and grabbed the covers saying "wake up daddy, wake up!" She thought she was grabbing his toes. :-) I reminded her that he was not home and she said..."oh. mexico. huggie daddy. all my kisses." Then she reached into the air and said "squeeeeeeze" (air hug) and went on about her business. lol How can 2 year olds be so smart? And so dramatic. How did she learn that???

This past year I was blessed to be asked to take part in leading some of the camp ministry for the Jefferson Baptist Association. I recently made a post on the Facebook page to those who are listed as "fans" of this ministry. So, you too might be interested in this information.

I pray that everyone had a wonderful Christmas time! In looking over some of the highlights of the past year, I want to share my great sense of awe and wonder at the mighty things that the Lord has done in many of your lives this past year. What a privilege it was to serve along other brothers and sisters in the ministry of the Jefferson Baptist Association at Bates Creek Camp.

For the coming year, would you join me in praying over some things that are coming to mind?

1. Oh that we would see a revival among young people in our county! I long for the day that Jonathan Edwards (famous theologian from year’s ago) wrote about. He mentioned that during times of great revival the “young people” stayed up day and night sitting around discussing the excellencies of Christ and how wonderful were the attributes of God! Please join me in praying that Jefferson County, Missouri’s churches would be known for a young people who have “not lifted their souls to an idol” and who praise the Lord with a pure heart! (Psalm 24)

2. Please pray that the Lord would set aside Godly, leaders to serve you all well by being completely consumed with the glory of Christ and because of that, would pour out their hearts and lives in preaching the Gospel that hearts might be converted and that we, as Christians, might be strengthened in a genuine faith.

3. Pray that the Lord would raise up some of you to leave Jefferson County and never come back because the Lord has set you aside to give your life for the cause of Christ in an unreached area as a missionary. During our discussions this past year at camp, I was greatly humbled and overjoyed to hear that this is already a desire for some of you. Lord, please glorify your Name by raising up missionaries to proclaim Your glorious grace to the uttermost parts of the Earth!

There are so many more things that I want to mention, but I will start with these. Please do remember those who are going to be planning for the year to come. I am excited about what I am hearing already.

Below is an e-mail that I sent out to others that are interested in receiving updates about the Hispanic Ministry at Rockport. I was thinking...you know, there are some that do browse this page and might be interested in the same information. So here you go. Let me say...please pray that we might be faithful in preaching the True Gospel, above everything else that we do or would like to do!

I believe that we are seeing some good things through Iglesia Bautista de la Gracia (IBG). We are averaging between 20 - 30 people on a consistent basis every Sunday. We have taken out an add in the Hispanic Yellow Pages as we are going to look at putting an add in the "Red Latina" which is the widest read newspaper among Hispanics in our area.

In addition to seeing people on Sunday, we typically have around 20 people meeting for our mid-week community group in South St. Louis Count. Prayer Request - Pray as we consider how we are going to start a new community group for Southern Jefferson County. In speaking with the brother that is working with us. Our desire is to begin getting to know more of the people in this area, and start a small group as the Lord provides leaders as well as financial resources.

Please be in prayer for us financially. The people who are coming are very immature at best, and most of them are not born-again. However, they are not resistant to hearing the Gospel, which leads me to believe that the Lord is going to bring about a great work here. We are collecting an offering each week, and we are receiving $100.00/month support from the Jefferson Baptist Association. We also receive $200.00/month from Rockport. However, we would like to take care of the brother that is helping us by teaching/preaching/visiting, etc. Right now we are not even capable of reimbursing his mileage, that is to say nothing of any sort of compensation for his time. Again, I am just asking that you would please set aside some time to pray over this matter.

Extra Worker during Christmas break. We are going to have a college student from southern Texas, originally from Mexico, coming to assist us for a few weeks in December. Please pray that we might have some extra funds to help bless him. He is going to work in the community, making visits, and lead some Bible study discussion as he serves a mini "internship" with us during this time. His name is Irian and I know that he would appreciate your prayers.

Brothers and sisters, thank you for praying over this ministry. Please do continue to pray that the Name of Christ would be exalted and proclaimed where it is not currently known. I am speaking now specifically of the Hispanic/Latino culture in the United States of America.

Update on Spanish Service

It has been a while since I have updated everyone on where we are on the Spanish service at Rockport. We have been going by the name of "Iglesia Bautista Rockport" for quite some time now. (For those who don't know...this means "Rockport Baptist Church." We are often asked the question "what does 'Rockport' mean?" Well...it doesn't really translate all that well, so..we have decided to look at changing the name to something that would hopefully reflect our mission as well as would help native Spanish speakers identify with this theme. So, it looks like we are headed for changing the name to "Iglesia Bautista Gracia Soberana" or "Sovereign Grace Baptist Church." I hope to share more information with you about this very soon!

Another exciting thing that has been going on is with the Pastor that has been helping us out. Pastor Marco Sanchez has been assisting by preaching, teaching, and visiting regular attenders. In addition, we have been able to have great discussions over people such as the great missionary William Carey and men such as C.H. Spurgeon, Martin Luther, etc. This is exciting.

I would like to thank all of those who have put together time in copying/labeling Cds, DVDs and other items. Brother Sanchez was commenting last Wednesday on the fact that he was challenged by a message by Paul Washer. This message was preached in Texas and in Spanish is called "Christ Died for Us" or "Cristo Murio por Nosotros."

Please pray as we make transitions and seek the Lord on how to continue.

Prayer Requests

First, I would like to start by saying that I obviously haven't updated this page in a long time. I have been trying to be more disciplined in spending more time with my family and dedicating awake time to being with them after work in the evenings. This has lead me to slow off a little bit on posting here as well as the "Rockport Views" blog. I do intend on coming back to this very soon, but I would like to like to take the time to pass along some prayer requests to those who do read this blog.

There is going to be a meeting very soon with the missions team at Rockport Baptist Church. We are going to be talking about taking a very strong turn toward a greater commitment to missions both local and global. This is very exciting but also very scary!

Second, pray for the upcoming weekend on Biblical manhood and womanhood. This event is hopefully going to be the first of many events to come on a much needed subject. Pray for the young people in and near Jefferson County, Missouri that their hearts my be changed and we might see congregations transformed by the work of Christ in their lives!

I write this post as I am preparing to leave to speak at a Youth Retreat. The basic theme of this retreat is "missions on campus" focusing on areas that these young men and women have grown over the summer and now will be returning to their schools this fall. This theme excites me because it is all about missions.

Though missions is not our ultimate aim, it is incredible to be a part of what does bring about the ultimate aim of the church which is, the Worship of God. Missions is only temporary...we will only have missions as long as this world lasts, but Worship of the living God will last forever. We will never stop doing that! Missions exists because Worship does not exist among every nation, tribe, and tongue. (Thank you John Piper for that great thought!) You can read more about this in his book Let the Nations Be Glad.

It is my prayer that as students are returning to their campuses this fall that they might be consumed with a passion to see the Lord glorified and magnified in the hallways, football teams, school bus, and wherever else they might find themselves!

I hope to add some testimony about the event in the next few days!

Praise Reports from Mexico and Arnold, Missouri

First, I just got off the phone with a man named "Jorge" who came to Rockport before we started our services in Spanish. He was here on a work visa for 6 months and lived in South County. He was referred to me by Kurt McClure and his family who had a connection with the apartments where he was working. He attended Rockport for a few weeks before he returned to Mexico. This man was visited by Ruben Moreno from Corpus Christi, Texas while he was here to share with us. Jorge called me to let me know that almost 2 years later he still is following Christ, and his family has not been so supportive of him. He is back on a temporary work visa in Louisiana. He wanted to call to tell me that he truly believes that the Lord saved him while he was here with us and remembers having great fellowship, especially the meal at the Webers home! He also asked if there is any way that we might consider coming the state of Michoacan, Mexico to encourage the saints and work among the people there. Praise the Lord!

Second. Some of you all might Eneida. She attended our Spanish service for a while, went with her kids and others to go camping with many others from Rockport, and has since returned to Mexico. I want you all to know that Eneida keeps in contact with us, letting us know that she too came to know the Lord while she was here among us, and is now faithfully serving Christ in a congregation in Mexico!

I received a phone call today as soon as I got to the picnic. It was a call from someone returning from a mission trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. They received a lot of persecution from the people of the village, but they found sweet fellowship with some brothers who are pastors of evangelical churches outside of this particular village in La Barra de la cruz. The pastors asked this particular missionary if it would be possible to return with some sort of teaching and instruction for them as Pastors. The phone call today was a request for such an event.

Finally, we had a new visitor at the Spanish service this morning. He even came back for our picnic this afternoon and brought his five year-old son. I don't know much about this man yet except that he tells me that he is born again, was able to have a good conversation about the Scriptures this afternoon and is excited about going to a church that is closer to his home. He previously attended a Hispanic Southern Baptist Congregation in the north St. Louis County area, which is a long hall from where he lives.

We also saw David back at the Spanish service this morning and that was a real blessing.

Thank you Rockport for praying, giving, and going. I pray that this testimony might encourage the saints and stir us up unto further good works!

Prayer Request for Bates Creek Camp

I am writing this to those faithful prayer warriors that read this blog on a regular basis. Would you take a few moments to pray specifically for this Youth Camp that is coming up next week? Many people acknowledge that modern day ministries of all sort "dumb" down the gospel and actually preach a different gospel rather than that of the Scripture.

We just came back from a week of camp with Boys (grades 3-6) and I rejoice that we had a week of teaching the meaning of repentance and faith in Christ. The boys could tell you the meaning of these words as well as explain a basic meaning of the infallibility of the Scriptures. There were several young men that wept over their sins during this camp and made public professions that they came to camp as sinners apart from Christ, but God showed them their sins, they repent of their sins and are trusting in Jesus Christ. Let me tell you this was a amazing thing to be a part of. I don't recall seeing anything like this in a long time. It was truly amazing.

Pray this week for the teenagers that are going to be at the camp. Please pray that we would not fall for the world's pressure of trying to make the message "I'm okay, you're ok." Please pray that we will not succumb to the foolishness of trying to make the gospel "relevant" or do anything other than preach the "full counsel of God." Oh that the Lord would be pleased to save some souls this week and would call some people to give up their lives for the sake of missions to areas where Christ is not proclaimed!

Please join with me in asking the Lord to call people from darkness into light and to make His Name Great among the peoples at camp this week! If I have a moment, I am going to update this blog at least once during the week so that I can keep others informed.

Prayer Requests from the Spanish Service

Brothers and Sisters,

We have been graced by some visitors that have come by to talk the last few days. These people attend out 8:00am service in Spanish at Rockport. Our group of people have become increasingly interested in the history of the reformation and after sharing with them about the story of Martin Luther, they are very excited about watching the movie. They only have one perspective of this man's life and death...what has been taught by the catholic church. Would you pray for the group of people that came to borrow the DVD and are watching it today?

New People
We had three new people last week: Erika, Guillermo, and Abram. Praise the Lord! One of these is a brother of one of regular attenders, Ismael. This new guy claims to be a believer and at least has some experience with church music.

Resources
Please pray that we might continue to purchase items that we need for teaching, as well as we might receive assistance from a native Spanish speaker that could help provide some guidance for the ministry. My Spanish is very limited. Don't get me wrong, it is better than what it was...but there is so much more that this group of people need to be taught.

Continued Passion for current believers and Church Leaders
I don't know if something like this would be possible, but as an effort to reach current believers, Pastors, and leaders, I would like to see if there is a way to offer something in Spanish in conjunction with our local Founder's conference. To my knowledge, there are not many resources, if any, that are available like this for the Spanish speaking community in North America, specifically the U.S.

Preparing for Camp

Next week is Boy's Camp at Bates Creek. As I was thinking over some things that would be good to meditate on concerning this week, and I was reading through a book that I have been pushing through for a few months now. This book is a good read and I would suggest it to everyone. It is entitled, "The Heart of Prayer - What Jesus Teaches Us" by Jerram Barrs, Professor at Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri.

As I was thinking about the task that is set before us, here is a quote from the book that really spoke to me. He is speaking here about the High Priestly Prayer from John 17.

Jesus is showing us in the clearest possible way that our work in God's kingdom will be ineffective without our prayer for the Father to accomplish his purposes through his blessing on all we do. He is showing us that our attempts to teach the Word will fail unless we pray that the Father send the Spirit to render them powerful and effective. AS will our teaching of our own children at home, our teaching in our churches or any other kind of teaching ministry, our leading of worship, our music and our singing, our visiting, our serving, and our hospitality.

By the example of his High Priestly Prayer, Jesus is teaching us that in all the things we do, it is not enough to be busy for the Lord, not enough to be active in doing his work, not enough to be committed to teaching his Word. In addition to the work we do, we are always to bed the Lord to do his work in people's hearts and minds. For without his work, without his blessing, all our labors will be in vain.

This is why Acts records that the apostles devoted themselves to the ministry of the Word and prayer. In fact, the text reverses the order--the apostles said:

We will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:4)

Our ministry is to e prayer and the ministry of teaching; prayer and the ministry of serving; prayer and the ministry of music; prayer and the ministry of singing; prayer and the ministry of hospitality; prayer and the ministry of giving; prayer and the ministry off...You complete the sentence! All of us whatever our service to the Lord and to his people, are called to recognize that all our devotion and everything else we do will accomplish nothing unless we turn to the Lord in prayer, and unless the Lord blesses our efforts and establishes the labors of our hands.

We are back in Texas

Brothers and Sisters,

Thank you for praying for us while we were in Mexico. We are back in Texas and we will all be heading back home tomorrow morning. Hopefully there will be many testimonies to post here and I would like to invite all of the members of our team to do so.

Well, last night I heard from Aaron again! Things are just great there!

Aaron had to get up extremely early Tuesday morning, and didn't get back to Centenario until 10:30 last night. The "Senior Trip" to Ciudad Victoria was nice, but tiring. However, he was not complaining, because again, what an opportunity to spend such a special time with the young men. When he got back to the camp site last night, the rest of the team was so excited because they had such a wonderful day with the people.

Also, I WAY underestimated the amount of people that have been attending the Bible study! The women's group has been having about 25. That is amazing!

Today, Wednesday, the team will say their goodbye's and head back across the border into Texas. I know I mention this every trip, but please pray. It can be so difficult to say goodbye. Especially when you don't know if you'll ever see these people again. Also, not knowing the impact of the time spent there can be difficult. Especially with this kind of mission trip. So often you hear of people building houses, or libraries, etc. Also, I myself have been on a mission trip that the whole point was to walk into a village, talk someone into saying a prayer....and really meaning it...then going on our merry way.

This week, I have had a handful of people, all "Christian's" mind you, question me as to what my husband was doing in Mexico. I explain that he is there on a mission trip. They say...oh, what's he building. I say relationships. They say...yeah, but is he building houses? I say no. They say... well then what is he doing there? I say making friends and telling them about Christ. Preaching. Teaching. They say...oh, that's all! As if to say that preaching the Gospel of Christ is not as important as building a house! Unbelievable.

So, if any of you kids are reading this after you get home. And you're struggling with knowing whether or not your time there was used by God (even though you didn't build a house!) Know that the Lord has used you. Remember Carmen. We saw no fruit for two years. Who would've thought that Carmen would come to know Christ!

Thank you for spending your time off with these people that we have come to love. They need to know Christ, and what an honor it is that they have invited us there to share! Thank you Lord for making a way!

I can't believe I almost forgot!

The women's Bible study is going so well. They have had a great response.

Also, VBS is going well, just as always.

The big news however, is that the evening Bible study is bringing in more families than we've ever had in the past! I plan to get more specifics on this tonight when Aaron calls. He told me that several families were attending. Folks, although several doesn't sound like much, when you consider there were only about 4 women and their children attending in the past....several families is a considerable amount.

Also pray that the men in the village will continue attending, and that even more may show up tonight! This is exciting!

Ok, well that's it for now. I'm sure I'll think of something else in about 5 minutes!

Well, things are going just wonderfully in Centenario! The Lord is good, and he is bringing people out of the woodwork!

The people were sooooo happy & excited when our team arrived! They had once again been anticipating our arrival. As I've mentioned before, there have been many close relationships formed, and much trust has been gained over the past 4 years. The Lord has truly opened the door for us to share with the people there.

Friday was spent setting up camp, and catching up with a few friends.

Saturday, a few of the men went to San Juan (about 45 min from Centenario), to conduct a pastor's conference. One of the other churches that is participating with our group this year, brought a nice collection of books to give to each pastor in attendance. (Aaron will update with a list of the books, and the name of the church, later, I'm sure.) The books were all in Spanish, and were happily received. What a wonderful gift!! After a day of preaching, teaching & worshiping, it was back to Centenario. They were invited to come back to the church in San Juan on Sunday.

Sunday morning, Rick led worship, and Aaron did some teaching. About 20 people from our group were able to attend. Also, I hope I'm not making this up, but I'm pretty sure that Aaron said some of the locals went with them. (This is what I get for not posting immediately after talking to Aaron!) Then in the afternoon, they were able to attend a soccer game with some of the young men from the village.

Last night, (Sunday), the teacher from the school approached Aaron. The young men that are graduating this week, asked the teacher if Aaron can go on their "Senior Trip" with them. It's just a little field trip to the capital of the state Taumalipas. It is called Ciudad Victoria. They will be visiting a little museum and walking around the city. I'm not sure what day this will be. Maybe today?? This is an even greater sign that the Lord has opened a door with these young men. Even with the teacher, as he must have a great deal of trust with Aaron to invite him to come along.

Many of you are well aware that we had to make the trip shorter than originally planned. The desire was to stay in Mexico for 10 days this time. That was not a possibility due to the increased travel expenses. Normally, we are able to fly round trip for about 210. This year, one way was more than that! Please pray that the Lord will use their time there greatly.

Many of you have asked about Carmen. She is the lady that had the death saint around her neck. Last year, she ripped it from her neck, gave it to Aaron, and asked him to destroy it. She had placed her trust in Christ, and wanted nothing to do with the wicked way that she had been following! We thank the Lord for this over and over. Carmen is doing well. She continues to profess Christ as her salvation. She has been helping with the cooking this week.

Please pray for Can Can (Ivar) & Rudy. That their eyes might be opened to Christ!

Please pray for safe travel to & from the different towns in the area.

Please pray for me (Rachel) as I try to handle all things Bates Creek while Aaron is away. And for little Olivia who is REALLY missing her daddy! The last two times he went to Mexico she was only 3 months & 7 months. I wasn't convinced that she really knew what was going on. Now that she's almost 1 (July 5), she is really missing him. And she ABSOLUTELY knows what is going on! Every time my phone rings she says "Daddy!" She's just waiting to hear his voice on the other line! I can't wait to see her reach for him when he gets home!!!!! It's weird to think that last year's summer trip had me a nervous wreck, wondering if Olivia would come while he was gone! My how time flies.

Mexico 2008

Hey Everyone! So sorry for the delay getting the first post up regarding our peeps in Mexico. This post is just a little blurb that I wrote up for our church, so that they can be praying accordingly each day.

The team has arrived in Centenario as of about 1pm today (Friday). They will be setting up camp and making initial visits this evening.

Saturday-Tuesday will be spent making home visits, having VBS, men's & women's Bible study, and helping with the locals in any way possible.

Saturday & Sunday, Aaron and a few of the other men will be conducting a pastor's conference in San Juan. They have a wonderful collection of books for the pastors that will be attending. It should be a wonderful time of discipleship & fellowship for the brothers that are living there in the neighboring villages.

Wednesday will be spent packing up & heading back across the border into Texas.

Thursday their flight leaves Harlingen at 9:00am and they will arrive in St. Louis at 1:30pm.

Please pray that this group would once again be well accepted among the community. Great accomplishment was made last year when the town officials gave us a letter of welcome to come there and minister as often as we would like. A great deal of trust has been gained through the repeated visits to this area in Mexico. We want the families there to realize that our people are there not to entertain them, and not for a vacation, but rather to show them the love of Christ.

Please pray for their safety while in Mexico, but also during their return.

Why do they leave when they graduate?

I am thankful to hear that there is a stirring in some of the leaders within the churches of the Jefferson Baptist Association (Jefferson County, Missouri). Recently the question has been asked, "why are teenagers leaving the church when the graduate and what can be done to keep them." Well, I would love to have a little conversation about this for those who would like to chime in. The reason why I am excited to hear that there is a stirring is because I think that people are waking up to realize that many, if not most, of the people in our "youth ministries" today are unregenerate and have never experienced the "new birth" that is in Jesus Christ. Second, there is a different phenomenon going on...that is that we are seeing people that are "graduating" from youth ministries and they are not entering in what should be "mature Christian adulthood" within the congregation. They are half-hearted about participating within the body of believers, they don't really know what it means to be accountable, etc.

There is a book that I am reading through regarding some of these issues. Now, as I would not agree with everything in this book, it has been useful on some points, and I would like for our Student Ministry Team at Rockport to discuss it's contents. The name of the book is "Family Driven Youth Ministry" by Mark DeVries. It has been sitting on my shelf now for quite some time and I am just now getting around to reading it. On page 26, I would like to quote the following statement.

The crisis in youth ministry is, simply put, that the ways we have been doing youth ministry have not been effective in leading our young people to mature Christian adulthood. Even with the massive increase in funding and training for youth ministry, even with the exponential increase in the number of resources available to those of us doing youth ministry, we are seeing no appreciable increase in the percentage of adults in our culture who are living out their faith for themselves.

Now, obviously there are some flaws with the above statement, however I would like to look at the intent of the quote that we have failed to present people as "mature Christian adults." I can't agree more. Perhaps the reason is because many, if not most, have failed to actually preach the gospel in their youth ministries (like me), thereby most of their teenagers have never heard their need to repent of their sins and to trust in Christ. Or perhaps even those with a great teaching and preaching of the gospel, fail to realize that having young people together just for the sake of "having young people together" makes no good sense at all.

Well, I have already commented more than I wanted to for this first post, because I am curious what others would say to this.

It has been a while since I have posted an article on my blog. So, I figured I would kill two birds with one stone. Below is an article that I submitted to the Jefferson Baptist Association for their monthly newsletter. It is an article to review some of the information from this past weekend's Student Conference.

We had an amazing “kick off” to the 2008 year at Bates Creek Camp with our Spring Conference “Don’t Waste Your Life.” Approximately 200 students and leaders toughed out the extremely cold temperatures and messy, muddy, soaked ground, rain, drizzle, and all that other stuff to hear a powerful message on the need to repent of sin and turn to Jesus Christ, for to live your life with any other aim, is a failure and a loss.

Saturday featured different messages on discipleship, commitment to the local church body, and missions. We hope to share with you some of the testimonies of the students who stood up and in front of everyone made comments such as, “I’ve been living a lie, thinking that I have been saved, but now I know what it means to be dead to sin, and alive to Christ!” Let me encourage you to read through your Jefferson Baptist newsletter and except to see more information from this year’s spring retreat.

Our desire for our summer camps this year is that we might preach Christ. Oh that the Lord would move upon our young people in the association! Oh that a since of conviction of sin and a God-granted repentance and faith in Jesus Christ would sweep through the participants in these activities and we would see people saved, Pastors and Missionaries called, and all for one purpose. The GLORY OF GOD! Will you pray with me to this end? Will you pray with me that the Lord would glorify His Name through the faithful preaching of the Word of God? Don’t get me wrong…we have some really awesome activities and some fun stuff planned for the summer, but we want something more than just all the fun that you would expect from events at Bates Creek, we are asking for a sovereign move of God this summer.

To God be the glory…great things He hath done!

Baptists and Alcohol

Below is an e-mail sent out by a good brother here in Missouri. Recently there has been some very good discussion on this issue, and I appreciate this man posting this. For that reason, I am going to post it here for others to enjoy.

I recently wrote the ARBCA (Association of Reformed Baptist Churches in America) and asked what their position on alcohol is.

Here's their reply:

Dear Jim, ARBCA has no stand on the use of alcohol except to condemn the sin of drunkenness. We are a confessional association and we believe all three paragraphs of chapter 21 in the London Baptist Confession of 1689 to be a good summary of Bible doctrine on the matter. We see fermented wine, for example, as a food and nothing more, with no moral aspects whatsoever. It would be the immoderate use of this food that Holy Scripture condemns. We are careful to not make sin what the Scripture does not make sin, and end up perverting the very doctrine of sanctification in generating standards for holiness when the Scripture has not sanctioned such rules. I do hope this helps. This is a confusing issue for many. May the Lord bless you.

21. Christian Liberty and Liberty of Conscience
The liberty which Christ has purchased for believers under the Gospel, lies in their freedom from the guilt of sin and the condemning wrath of God, from the rigours and curse of the law, and in their deliverance from this present evil world, from bondage to Satan, from dominion of sin, from the harm of afflictions, from the fear and sting of death, from the victory of the grave, and from everlasting damnation. - This liberty is also seen in their free access to God, and their ability to yield obedience to Him not out of slavish fear, but with childlike love and willing minds. All these freedoms were also experienced in substance by true believers under the Old Testament law, but for New Testament Christians this liberty is further enlarged, for they have freedom from the yoke of the ceremonial law to which the Jewish church was subjected. They also have greater boldness of access to the throne of grace and fuller communications of the free Spirit of God than believers under the law normally experienced.

God alone is Lord of the conscience, and has left it free from all doctrines and commandments of men which are in any respect contrary to His Word, or not contained in it. Thus to believe such doctrines or to obey such commands out of conscience, is to betray true liberty of conscience. The requiring of an implicit faith, an absolute and blind obedience, is to destroy liberty of conscience and reason also.

They who on pretence of Christian liberty practice any sin, or cherish any sinful lust, pervert the main purpose of the grace of the Gospel to their own destruction. They completely destroy the object of Christian liberty, which is that we, being delivered out of the hands of all our enemies, might serve the Lord without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him, all the days of our lives.

However, I have been browsing around the Mayo Clinic's website to see what they say regarding scientific research on herbal supplements. I found something interesting that you might want to know.

We have been talking in our office about a doctor that is starting to take his patients with depression, bi-polar, etc., off of their psychotropic medications and placing them on high amounts of fish oil. I thought that you might be interested to know that there is significant research that fish oil has been proven to prevent and treat high blood pressure and most forms of heart disease. In addition, there has been new research that shows very, very, very favorable results in treatment of depression, anxiety, etc.

If you are interested, you can check out what the Mayo Clinic says. However, I believe that there has been more research proving it's effectiveness since this posting from Mayo Clinic.

Centenario (Report from February/March Team)

After returning from our trip to Centenario, there are many things that I would like to report. There was a team of 6 who participated. A total of 5 different congregations were represented. Though our focus was the village of Centenario, however we did enjoy spending time with our missionaries Steve and Robin Henry in La Poza, as well as fellowshipping with Iglesia “El Buen Pastor” in San Juan, Mexico.

During our most recent trip we were able to bring a much anticipated Giant Print Bible to Carmen. This is the lady who made a profession of faith during our November trip. We were able to sit down with her and ask her to explain again what she believed happened during that time. She recounted that since that point she has continued to renounce her trust in the things of the world, and specifically the “saint of death” necklace that she took off and gave to us to destroy. She spoke of her faith in Jesus Christ in front of the former director of the school. This really was a great time. She is looking forward to an adult Bible study this summer.

Rockport had also collected money, along with the community, to purchase a much-needed air conditioning unit for the school. John, a member of a congregation in Tennessee, went with me, along with the school teacher and a young man from the village to purchase this item. During the trip John and I shared with the school teacher why we are so committed to the education of the children in the village. We desire that they might be able to be educated so that they may have jobs and provide for their families. We also discussed the greater need and that is that children and adults need to be educated so that they might be able to read and to think through what the Lord has said in His Word! On Sunday, before we left, the teacher came to me and mentioned that the community officials would like to “fix up” a house for us so that we might have a place to shower, and place some of our belongings. This house used to belong to a retired school teacher, who has since moved.

On Sunday I also spoke to the Pastor of a church in San Juan, Mexico. I told him of our desire to be a blessing to the Pastors and church leaders in the area. He was very excited about this and requested more information.

It was a great blessing to have Charlie, John, Michael, Rick, and Irian involved in this trip. Each of them made special connections with the people there! Thank you to all who participated as well as thank you to the congregations and families that made this possible!

There will be more information to come, and I hope that there will soon be posts from the perspective of the other missionaries along on this trip.

We are in Texas!!!

We are back in the United States! Thank you all for praying and for checking in on us while we were in Mexico. Our time was well spent and I hope that others on the trip can post testimonies here soon about things that they learned and from their perspective what all happened.

We were able to spend the usual time having coffee with Juana and visiting with the town folks. We were able to deliver the giant print Bible to Carmen, and visit with others that we have not seen in a while. This afternoon, after church, we had a great discussion with two of the young men from the village of Centenario. We discussed some of the depravity of man, and our desire that they would consider if God exists, and if He does, what does that mean. Please continue to pray for Rudy and Ivar. I told them that we would be!

The Lord has really blessed us with John and Charlie. The Lord brought together a great time of laughter, serious discussion, and great fellowship with one another. Hopefully they will be participating with us in future endeavors to Mexico!

There are so many things that I would like to say, but for now I will just ask that you continue to pray for the ongoing work in Mexico, and for our safe return to our families tomorrow. Soon I will be posting more information about our Summer conference for Pastor's and Leaders. We desire to have this in Mexico on June 19-20, 2008.

Things are going well

Aaron tells me that things are going well! Above, you can see a few pics from two different villages. They were able to visit La Posa yesterday which is where we were stationed our first year. It was a great time, and many of the people remembered Aaron, Rick, & Michael from four years ago. Robby, if you are reading this...Jesus was asking about you!

Last night, they were back in Centenario, where they were able to visit Carmen. This is the woman that professed faith in Christ back in November. They delivered a new large print Bible for her. Her eyesight is horrible, so hopefully this extra large print will be easier for her to read. I was able to talk to her on the phone....well, attempt to anyway....and she sounded so happy!

Today, they drove into the city to purchase the air conditioner. The town had raised part of the money, and the rest was provided by our team. They were able to purchase one unit that would supply air to two rooms. Not sure how that works, but I'm sure Aaron will expound when he comes home.

Tonight, there was a circus in town. However, rather than going, the young men in the town asked if they could just "hang" & talk. What a great opportunity! Praise the Lord!

As you pray, please remember a few specific names. Rudy, Ivar, & Daniel. There are many more, but those are the names for today. Salvation...that's what we're praying for!

Tomorrow evening, the guys will be packing up camp and heading back across the border into Texas. Pray for open hearts, that even in their last moments there, the Lord would make himself known! Also, for safe travel. And for ease at the border. Normally there are no problems, but it is always a possibility.

Made it into Mexico

Well, Aaron asked me to keep things updated here on the old blog, so...I'll let you know what I know when I know it. For those of you that are the friends & family of John & Charlie, if you want more details, or if you have questions, please leave a comment in response to the messages, including your email address, and I will contact you asap.

The team members met up in Texas today at about noon. They headed for the Enterprise rental to pick up the van, then made their stop at the storage unit to pick up the tents, and finally dashed into Wal-Mart for a few last minute necessities. Everything went well except for the fact that my wonderful hubby left his driver's license at the rental place! EEK! Enterprise was so helpful...they brought the license to him! Soo....all is well. Thank you Lord!

Then it was time to head for the border....finally. They made it across the border at about 5pm. I have not yet heard any details about how they were accepted, but I am certain that the report will be very favorable.

Aaron normally calls me around bedtime when things settle down. However, tonight there seems to be a problem with the phone service. He sent a text message saying that he couldn't get a call to go through. He also said that camp is set up and that they are getting ready to hit the sac.

So, that's all for now. Please continue praying for the people of this village. Carmen is the woman that professed faith in Christ in November....as she ripped the saint of death from around her neck and denounced her previous beliefs. Also, for the school teachers (sorry, I don't know their names,) that they might be saved. They run the school and what a wonderful thing it would be for them to begin teaching the Bible...the Gospel...in the school! Also, for the pastors from neighboring areas that will be joining together to pray & fellowship. This will be a true time of encouragement to them as well.

And last for tonight, please remember the young men/boys that have spent much time listening and discussing and just being open to hearing the Gospel. For much of my life, I was of the belief that a mission trip was going somewhere and trying to get as many people as possible to say a prayer. I now realize that I was totally wrong. DUH! Showing someone Christ can (& does) take time.....and patience.....and persistence! Please pray that the Lord might be Magnified in Centenario this weekend. And that our team's patience & persistence will be seen by the people as nothing less than a sincere desire to show them our LORD!

Thoughts on Bates Creek Camp

Some of you all know that I am working with a team of people to administrate this year's camps for the Jefferson Baptist Association. Below you will find an article that is going out in this month's newsletter for the association. I ask you to pray for me, as well as others who are working on this.

To God Alone be the Glory!

I am writing this letter to you so that you might be challenged, along with those who are going to be attending this year’s Spring Student Conference. The theme this year is “Don’t Waste Your Life.” This is a message that I most desperately need to hear, and this is the message that needs to be the cry to our young people in our congregations, as well as the lost young person who lives next to you. Don’t Waste Your Life! Life is short, and it will soon be over! Are you ready to give an account for what you have done with your life that God has given you?

This year’s spring conference along with our summer camp will closely be related in theme. Both of those theme’s are related in the sense of it is our desire to urgently present before our young people the plea to follow Christ. Not just for the lost, but for those who are born again! Forsake this life, and you will save it for eternal life! Don’t Waste Your Life in this world! Below you will find a quote (pages 12-13) from a book by Pastor/Teacher John Piper, of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The title of the book is “Don’t Waste Your Life.”

Another riveting force in my young life—small at first, but oh so

powerful over time—was a plaque that hung in our kitchen over

the sink. We moved into that house when I was six. So I suppose

I looked at the words on that plaque almost every day for twelve

years, till I went away to college at age eighteen. It was a simple

piece of glass painted black on the back with a gray link chain

snug around it for a border and for hanging. On the front, in old

English script, painted in white, were the words:

Only one life,

’Twill soon be past;

Only what’s done

for Christ will last.

To the left, beside these words, was a painted green hill with two

trees and a brown path that disappeared over the hill. How many

times, as a little boy, and then as a teenager with pimples and

longings and anxieties, I looked at that brown path (my life) and

wondered what would be over that hill. The message was clear.

You get one pass at life. That’s all. Only one. And the lasting measure

of that life is Jesus Christ. I am fifty-seven as I write, and that

very plaque hangs today on the wall by our front door. I see it

every time I leave home.

Let me encourage you to participate in this year’s Spring Conference and Summer Camp. That’s right; every single member of every single congregation in this association can participate. How? First, pray for the leaders and those who will be attending. Pray for your next door neighbor who doesn’t know Christ and consider discussing this very theme with them and invite them to the camp. Perhaps the Lord is leading you to help sponsor someone financially? Secondly, advocate that the young people of your church attend these events and that they come hungry, ready to receive the Word of the Christ that by believing in Him, will have life in His Name!

The Good News about Being a Sinner

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

1 Timothy 1:15 ESV

In a discussion with a college student and another man last night, I was reminded again of this passage in Timothy. Now, this passage certainlly deserves much time and attention, as does the whole of the Scriptures. However this passage struck me again as we were praying and struggling together over a common theme among many whom would consider themselves "Christian"especially evangelical.

Friends, one of the sweetest and greatest doctrines that you will find in the Scripture, is the doctrine of the depravity of man. Without going in to a systematic theology lesson here, I sense it would be better to just simply summarize some of our discussion last night and it's relevance for me and for you as well.

We live in a day and age where common man does not realize, nor accept that he is a sinner. Our "fast-food evangelism" goes something like this. We give people a list of questions, and their ability to say "yes" determines whether or not they are "saved." You know what I'm talking about, we ask people questions like:

Do you know that you are a sinner?
Do you know that Jesus died for sinners?
Do you want to go to heaven or hell?
If you want to go to heaven, then pray this prayer.

The result is a staggering. You have many people report that they have made their decision because they do not want to go to hell, so they have decided to "invite Jesus into their heart" so that they can go to heaven. The whole time they are decieved. Folks, we have got to understand what it means to really know that we are "sinners." We are fully deserving of God's wrath. There is none who is righteous, the thoughts and intentions of man's heart are only evil all the time. God is Holy, and we deserve to be punished for our treason against the creator of the universe. You can rest assured that every single person apart from Christ will be sent to hell because God will punish them and bring about the due peanalty for their sin.

However, inbedded in this we find a great relief. Friends, if you recognize and understand that you are this sinner that Paul is talking about, you are blessed! When God releals to you that you deserve his wrath, anger, and punishment and this will certainlly be your fate if something is not changed. Then you find the scriptures that remind you, Christ died for the ungodly, while we were dead in our tresspasses and sins, without God, without hope in this World. It is by grace that we have been saved! Praise the Lord!

After prayer and consideration, I feel that God has led me to write this letter first, in response to what Christ has recently done in and through me, and also because I feel that I simply can not contain the joy that is in my soul and the fire that God The Almighty has lit within me. I first want to say to anyone who will be receiving this email who has prayed for my soul recently or in the past, thank you so very much, for I know that much of what Christ has recently done in my life has been in response to prayer, and I am eternally grateful to all of have cared enough about me to lift my name up in prayer with concern for my soul.

After praying about what I should include in this letter, I feel led to share a little background to sort of set the stage. I first moved away from home this past summer (summer of 07). When I first moved away, if I'm honest I was mainly just excited to get away from my Christian parents so I would be finally be free to do some partying without the stress of trying to hide it from my loving parents. So that is exactly what I did for the first part of the summer. I partied and put my head down and ran away from Christ as fast as I could. I was living with my brother (whom God in his providence had saved the winter before) and some other roomates. My relationship with him was very wierd, because he didn't want to judge me, but yet God had changed his life so we had little in common. Since my brother had been saved he had started going to Karis Community Church in Columbia, Missouri (and since had joined the worship band playing the piano) The last thing that I wanted to do was go to church. I had spent my whole life in church, Sunday after Sunday, and this was my one time to get a break from it. But because of the guilt that I felt (mainly due to my brother urging me to go), towards the middle of the summer I started going with him. Every single Sunday I went, there would be a moment during the worship service when I would feel God pricking at my heart, and every single Sunday, by the end of the worship service, I would be an absolute snotty, teary mess, completely broken down and at the end of myself. If I'm honest with myself, every Saturday night I would lie in bed dreading the next day, knowing that God was going to break me down once again. I began to experience a very scary and heavy presence every single time I stepped into that church, and I knew exactly what was going to happen the next day in church. One night during the summer, after time and time again of God bringing me to the end of myself, and me continuing to run, and then repeating the same process again and again, something amazing happened. I was sitting in my room and thinking, and God spoke mightily to my soul. I knew at that moment if I did not "get off the fence" and commit to Christ, He was going to cut me off forever. I felt it was my last chance, and I knew that I must stop living a lie, and look to Christ.

God began to work in my life, and used the leaders of Karis to guide me through the very hard time that I was going through. I began playing the violin with my brother in the worship band, and soon began to become more and more deeply involved with the people of Karis. Things were really starting to turn around, and God was starting to work in me. But of course, as all Christians know, there was and is still much trial to come. When college started, a whole new wealth of temptation presented itself to me, and me being the week feeble man that I am, began to let satan convince me that my freshmen year at college would only come once, and I needed to take advantage of it. I began to fall right back into the same trap that I had fell into time and time again, and my walk with God began to suffer. The leaders at Karis new that something was up, and they, as well as many people from back home, I know were in prayer for my soul. Just as is going to happen many many times in my walk with Christ, God once again had to bring me to the end of myself. My first semester was pretty shaky at college, as I was struggling with resisting the wealth of temptation that college presented and staying involved and faithful with the church that I had joined. When I came home for Christmas break, I was still greatly struggling with following God, and trying to escape a past of seeking man's approval. Many people from home and at Rockport Baptist Church (the curuch I was at before college where my dad is the worship pastor) had very encouraging words for me, and God used many people to help me and give me wisdom through a controversial time in my life and I am very grateful for my Christian friends back home.

When I went back to college, Christ really began to due serious work in my life. I knew that it was time to grow up, and God began to give me incomprehensible strength in resisting sin at college that I had previously struggled greatly with and that was standing in the way of spiritual growth. I began to fall more and more in love with my Christian friends at Karis church, and God was using them to disciple me, and teach me. I began to develop a heart that loved to cry out to God in prayer, and study his word. I began to focus on my school work, church, and my Christian relationships rather than on being a typical immature dumb college freshmen. I started growing more and more in my walk with Christ, so much so that I almost wasn't prepared for how much work God was going to do in such a short period of time. One thing that has caused so much growth, is God providing so much accountability for me through Karis (but more on that later). A couple weeks into this semester, I began to experience things that I have never before experienced through God's unfailing grace. I recall several days in which I would come to my dorm room after a 10:00 class, and throw my bookbag down, thinking I was maybe going to catch some sleep before my next class, and the next thing I knew I was on my face on the floor in tears crying out to God in prayer for long periods of time. I had never experienced the power of God in such a way, and I was loving every second of it. I began to depend on prayer to get me through the day, and I began to get serious about studying the word and following Christ with my whole heart. The more I let go of my pride, and committed my life up into Christs hands, the more I began to experience amazing grace. These past couple of weeks have been absolutely a turning point in my life. God has began to put many people in my path to witness to, and God continues to throw me on my face in humbleness and prayer and give me a heart that is no longer ashamed of my God or His gospel...THANK GOD THANK GOD THANK GOD. Thats all I can say right now. As I look at my life right now, and then contemplate where it could be, I am absolutely humbled and amazed. I look at my "friends" at college, seeking for joy through alcohol, sex, and themselves, and know that apart from God's unbelievable grace I would be right there with them. I am so humbled at the church God has put me in and where I am at in my relationship with my church. Just to walk you through a typical week up here at college (in regards to my church): Sunday I obviously have church where I play in the worship band and meet new awesome people seemingly every week, Wednesday we have community groups at different Church member's humble homes, where we go through a lesson, then go around confessing and praying with one another, Thursday I have worship band practice where we also confess and pray and hold each other accountable as a worship team, and then usually on Friday or Saturday I meet with my accountability partner where we go through a very serious and hard (but awesome) accountability session confessing and crying to God in repentance for our sins throughout the week, as well as discussing different ways to assist each other in areas of struggle. God obviously knew how week I am for He has been so faithful in providing accountability for me as a young Christian who needs it sooo much. How gracious is God in providing so much loving accountability for my life that has been so very beneficial to my walk with Christ, especially at a hard time like freshmen year in college? I am again humbled and amazed.

So now to the main point of this letter..(long intro huh!) As I stated, these past couple of weeks have been absolutely incredible in my life. God is revealing so many new things to me daily, and growing me in ways I could never have imagined. Just an example, today I was driving home from a Q and A session with Dr. Shriener (part of our theology weekend at Karis) and I began to pray and was trying to really comprehend the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. In the blink of an eye, like scales were removed from my eyes, a revelation occurred in my soul and I began to realize like never before how in the world the sacrifice of Christ makes me counted righteous in Christ's eyes. I know it sounds basic, but I can not explain how clear it became. It sounds radical, but I can only be honest about what God is doing in my life. These types of these have been happening a lot lately, along with God putting many people in my path that I have been able to witness to and be a light to (including my roommate who last night I presented in great depth the gospel and walked him through some scripture...It was a very humbling and awesome time) and also just really giving me a needy heart for prayer. A couple of weeks ago when all of this kind of started happening, I really felt that God was preparing me for something for He was using me mightily as well as growing me more rapidly then I could really comprehend. One night I called my brother in Christ Aaron (and also my old youth pastor) and told him what God was doing and expressed that I felt that God was preparing me for something. Interestingly enough, he presented me with an oppurtunity to go on a mission trip with him to Mexico. I prayed a lot about it and God made it obvious to me that this is what He was preparing me for. God's sovereignty is truly amazing. I am not writing this letter asking for money (though if God leads you to take part in His work by giving, I will accept with humbleness and gratefulness)but rather asking for prayer that God would work mightily in Mexico in the hearts of the people there, and also to ask for prayer for God to continue to do mighty work in my life coming up to, through, and after this trip. I know that prayer has gotten me where I am, and prayer will sustain me. I have just felt so much joy in God for what He has done, I simply could not go another day without sharing God's grace in my life with other people. Thank you so much for reading this letter, and I ask sincerely for your prayers. College is still a wealth of temptation, and the devil tries to tempt me daily, but with the awesome accountability that God has provided for me, prayer, grace, and prayer from other brothers and sister in Christ (such as yourselves.. hint hint) I know that God will continue to sustain. Please keep me in your prayers, for God is doing a great work in me and I know He is going to use me mightily for His glory. I am passionate when I say I want to be a humble servant of the Most High, and I have a desire that is completely God given to be used in a way that makes me look like the nothing that I truly am, and makes God look like the everything that He truly is. What an amazing, all sufficient God.

Mission to Centenario - February/March 2008

I received some information over the past few days, and would like to pass that information along. First, let me thank you for praying for the team of us that have been working in this area. It is very obvious that you have been praying as the Lord has been moving through your prayers over the past 48 hours especially. Here are some things to mention.

First, I received a message from a teacher near Centenario, in the town of Emilio Zapata. This teacher had previously offered his classroom for us to teach his students whatever we like. He mentioned to me that he is looking forward to our return at the end of this month. (You must know that I haven't heard from this teacher since our trip in June of last year.

Secondly, I received a phone call today from a brother who works in the area and he told me that he mentioned to a few of the local Pastors about the idea of having a "mini conference" for them during our summer trip. The Pastors not only mentioned that they would like to participate, but they would like to contact their Pastor friends and ask them to take part as well. Praise the Lord! I am going to go in to more of this mission idea in future posts. For now, please be in prayer that we might be able to be a blessing to Pastors and congregations in Mexico. Pray that there might be those that will be committed to the true Gospel to partner with us in teaching, preaching, and supporting.

Finally, I am going to ask some of those who have participated in trips before or who will be going with us in the future to write a post on here to share with others the work of the Lord in this region of Mexico! To God Be the Glory.

This weeking was a little challenging when it came to the Sunday morning Spanish service. You see, I received a phone call Saturday night that there were some problems with the thermostat in the building where Pastor Daniel Hernandez meets. He was calling me to tell me that he most likely would not be able to make it to the service. Now, Pastor Daniel has been assisting us for a year now, translating, teaching and preaching and now he wasn’t going to be able to make it. So, I tried to find someone to help, but was unsuccessful. Here was my text:

Por esta razón, también nosotros, desde el día que lo supimos, no hemos cesado de orar por vosotros y de rogar que seáis llenos del conocimiento de su voluntad en toda sabiduría y comprensión espiritual, para que andéis como es digno del Señor, agradándole en todo, dando fruto en toda buena obra y creciendo en el conocimiento de Dios; Colosenses 1:9-10 La Biblia de Las Americas

Now, unless you speak Spanish, the text above probably doesn’t mean much to you because you can’t understand it. When I looked at it, I was overwhelmed at the thought of preaching this text in Spanish!!! I was reminded of something; I don’t know the language like I should, or like I want to. This started my thought process.

This was a painful reminder that I must confess that not only do I not know Spanish as well as I should, even more important, I do not have the knowledge of the Scripture that I should. Oh how I long and desire to know the Word of God, but sadly I feel sometime like I am reading a foreign language, but my prayer concerning this matter is this:

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes!With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Psalm 119 9-18 ESV.

I have underlined some points here for emphasis. Oh, that I would delight myself in the Word of Christ. For there is no other rule that God hath given man by which we may know how to glorify and enjoy Him! Christian, delight yourself in the law of God! Meditate on His precepts, and store up His Word in Your heart.

You say, what can I do when I don’t understand it? Seek the Lord!! What about when it seems like I am reading a foreign language. Pray earnestly, and don’t let go! Ask the Lord to open His word to you and incline your heart to the Scripture!

Back to the Hispanic Mission at Rockport, we made it through. The Lord blessed, and He is good. We continue to see new faces on a regular basis. Pray for us as there are some specific prayer requests that I would like to share with you:

Pray that the Lord would bring people to salvation through the preaching of His word!

Pray that there might be permanent residents and citizens that are truly converted, whom also the Lord has set apart for teaching and preaching, so that they might take leadership roles in this ministry in the southern section of St. Louis, Missouri.

We will need funding to supply a permanent Pastor to this role and this is an urgent need.

Pray for wisdom as we consider contacting a church in Mexico or another Spanish-speaking area for a young man that has been set apart for ministry and desires to serve this summer.

Pray for Rick as he continues to lead the music, and prepares to put together a band to assist in leading music.

Also, I would like to share with you a paraphrase of something that Randy Alcorn mention during the Fall 2007 Desiring God Conference in Minneapolis. He simply asked how we would feel if a random sample of say 30 people from your congregation were singled out to be executed against their own will the following day. What great lengths would you go through to intervene? What would you do if you knew that your tax money was going to support that? Would your response and the response of your congregation be any different? Why or why not?

Mother Delays Cancer Treatments So Baby Can Live

Expectant mother Lorraine Allard learned the devastating news that she was in the advanced stages of liver cancer when she was four months pregnant, according to the Daily Mail.
Allard, of St. Olaves in the U.K., had a choice: Delay treatment to save her baby, or terminate the pregnancy to save herself.

She chose the former, waiting until the fetus was viable before scheduling a Caesarean section.
"If I am going to die, my baby is going to live," Allard told her husband, Martyn, according to the Mail.

The baby came a week early and Allard, 33, gave birth on Nov. 18 to a healthy but premature boy she named Liam.

Exactly two months later, Allard died. She'd begun chemotherapy just after her son's birth. But in the end, it was too late.

Doctors believe Allard had bowel cancer that had gone undetected for years, eventually spreading to her liver. She realized something was wrong after she began suffering from stomach cramps, and tests revealed that her liver was covered with malignant tumors, the Mail reported.
"The doctors said they couldn't do anything because she was pregnant," Martyn Allard, 34, told the Mail. "She told them straight away they were not going to get rid of it. She'd have lost the will to fight."

The courageous and selfless mother was able to get out of bed and hold her tiny son several times beside his incubator before her death. Liam is the Allards' fourth child and first boy; his sisters are Leah, 10; Amy, 8; and Courtney, 20 months.

"Lorraine was positive all the way through," Martyn Allard told the paper. "She had strength for both of us. I can't begin to describe how brave she was. Towards the end we knew things weren't going well, but she was overjoyed that she had given life to Liam."

What is Worship?

This seems to be a hot topic again and for good reasons. As I was surfing around the web, I was reading Bob Kauflin's Blog, and found a great post about this very subject. You know, when you just can't write anything better, I will always point someone to others who know what they are talking about! Enjoy...and feel free to following the link to his site, because you will find great resources on such an important matter!

Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536) once said “Every definition is dangerous.” That may explain why when we try to define a word simply and precisely we often end up missing significant aspects of the word we’re defining. Attempts at explaining worship as “love,” or “intimacy,” or “relationship” say something true, but end up leaving out more than they contribute to our understanding of worship.

In spite of Erasmus’ warning, over the years I’ve come across numerous definitions of “worship” that have caused me think about worship more biblically.
Harold Best, in his book Music Through the Eyes of Faith defines worship in the broadest sense as “acknowledging that someone or something else is greater – worth more – and by consequence, to be obeyed, feared, and adored…Worship is the sign that in giving myself completely to someone or something, I want to be mastered by it. (pg. 143)

We want to be mastered the objects of our worship. And indeed we are. We worship whatever rules our time, energy, thoughts, longings, and choices. “Those who make them [idols] become like them; so do all who trust in them.” ( Psa. 115:8, ESVPsalm 115:8

A definition of worship that I appreciate for its simplicity and clarity is by Warren Wiersbe, who writes: Worship is the believer’s response of all that they are – mind, emotions, will, body – to what God is and says and does. (Warren Wiersbe, Real Worship, p. 26)

I’ve used that definition, or something similar, when I want to accent that worship can’t be half-hearted, and is all about God’s character, words, and acts.

David Peterson, in his wonderful book Engaging with God unpacks what at first blush is a more sterile, but nevertheless insightful, definition:
“Worship of the living and true God is essentially an engagement with him on the terms that he proposes and in the way that he alone makes possible. (Engaging with God, pg. 20)

Peterson’s definition highlights God’s initiative, authority, and enabling power in our worship.
Dr. Dan Block, who until recently was a Professor of Old Testament at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, defines true worship as “reverential human acts of submission and homage before the divine Sovereign, in response to his gracious revelation of himself, and in accordance with his will.” (from Dr. Block’s For the Glory of God. course notes)

This is the first definition that specifically mentions what many of the biblical words for worship imply - submission and homage.

Well, this post is already longer than I anticipated. But, here’s one more from William Temple’s (1881-1944) Readings in St. John’s Gospel.

“Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of imagination by His Beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose – and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin”.
Amen.

Songs from Sunday

Some have asked about the origin of the lyrics that we sang to "Doxology" on Sunday. We started by singing the traditional:

We followed this by singing a Psalm written by Issac Watts (Psalms of David) to the same tune. I hope that you enjoy these and that they are a blessing to your hearts! This ideas certainly did not come from me, but recently it was lead this way by a dear brother, Tom Clay, of First Baptist Church of Muscle Shoals. He led us in this song during the 2007 Reality Check Student Conference in Chattanooga, TN.

Notes from Sunday

Below is a section of my notes from a sermon that I preached this past Sunday. Not sure why I would want to post it here, but I hope that it will be a blessing to you. Obviously, not all of the notes here are exhaustive, however I pray that the Lord would use what is here to be a blessing.

Excerpt from Sunday's Sermon - Spanish Service @ 8:00a 12/20/2008

If you go to hang a picture on the wall in your house, it will do you good to make sure that you have a level. You may be able to get a good “eye” and be able to see if it is straight, however with a level you can put it next to your picture on the wall and you will be able to read the gauge and see if it is straight. Why? Because there is a standard, a gauge, to which you can compare it. Without this, you would just be lost.

God’s word is that sort of standard. In fact, it is the sole authority for truth and instruction for how we can live our lives to glorify God. I would like for you to consider some Scripture with me.

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord;
teach me your statutes!
13 With my lips I declare
all the rules of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I delight
as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts
and fix my eyes on your ways.
16 I will delight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.

Psalm 119:9-15 ESV

First, we have in verse nine the fact that there is question asked about how a young man can keep his way pure. The answer is simple, by guarding it according to the word of God! You want to know how you can battle sin, GUARD YOUR LIFE ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF GOD. You say, but that is so easy. I say to you, have you considered that there are so many other competing worldviews battling in your mind. There’s advice from friends, there are shows like Oprah, Dr. Phil. There are just so many other competing counsels for your to obey…but every single one of the them will lead you astray unless it is rooted in the rock-solid foundation of the Word of God.

Second, verse eleven points out something that is almost lost in modern day churches. That is the value of memorizing Scripture. Let me ask you a question…how many songs can you quote the entire line, verse, rhythm, and sing the tune? Better yet, are there any movies that you can quote? Why? Well, Aaron…you see these other things are just easier because they are put to music. Perhaps…but does that excuse you and I from memorizing the word of Christ? No!!! It is because you and I are lazy when it comes to handling the Word! How many Christians, I am counting myself in this number, will have 200+ Christian CD’s, books written by godly people, but will not wear out a Bible? And we wonder why we struggle so much with sin. Brothers and sisters, it is because you and I need a dose of God’s Word “stored up in our hearts” that we might not sin against God! A good friend of mine has a Bible and in the front cover it is written, Sin may keep you from this book, but this book will keep you from sin! It is true!

Then, a third component to fighting these battles against sin is to Meditate on the Word. Meditate. Now, some people here this word and they think of someone sitting in a strange position with their arms and feet crossed. However, the word implies to think and to dwell upon. Did you know that a cow has multiple stomachs? Did you know that when it eats the food is then processed to the first, then the cow vomits it back up and chews on it some more, then it goes down again, and then comes back up, and then back down again. Why? This cow is getting the maximum amount of nutrients possible from what he has been given. Brothers and sisters, we should get the maximum amount of nutrients possible because we are feasting on the healthiest food for our souls? How do you do this, well, when you read God’s word, take notes, when you are listening to a sermon, take notes. Go back to the Scriptures and get alone somewhere. Make sure that there is nobody to distract you, and humbly, yet boldly approach the throne of God in prayer and ask him to show you His Word and think upon the things of Christ. Meditate on His Word. Don’t just read it, think, listen, and obey.

Prayer Requests for Bates Creek Camp Planning

For those at Rockport, and those in and around the Jefferson Baptist Association in Jefferson County, Missouri, you may know that there are going to be some new directions with Bates Creek Camp. Upon returning from Mexico in the fall I had a call requesting that I would help be a part of a team of people helping with the programming. This has turned in to quite a blessing and a challenge. Please be in prayer about some things.

First, I would like you to pray regarding the selection of Speakers, Worship Leaders, and camp staff. There are several people involved in the process in this selection, and this is an exiting and also very challenging time. Specifically, we are looking for people that are going to be absolutely Biblical and therefore proclaiming the gospel and calling people to repentance and faith and thereby at the same time strengthening the believer!

Second, please be in prayer for those who are going to be attending the coming camp and retreat this year! It is our hope that many would be saved, and the believer would be strengthened all for the glory of God!

February Trip to Mexico

Below is some of a e-mail that I sent to our missions team at Rockport. Please consider praying over the future ministry of missions in Mexico. I am really praying that the Lord would expand the ministry efforts to encouraging and supporting the Pastors in the small, rural communities in Mexico where there is no access to Biblical training.

Here are some other areas where you can be praying about the future of the ministry in Mexico.

Pray that the Lord would provide funding for those who have gifts that can be used in these trips, but do not have the funds.
Pray that we might be provided a vehicle (such as an old suburban) that would be able to help provide transportation while in Mexico.
Pray for the needed funds for books, materials, and supplies.
Finally, pray that the Lord would put together a strong team for this summer. Especially those gifted in teaching, leading, willing to do VBS style ministry, women's ministry, and ministry to Pastors and leaders.

When I return to Mexico at the end of February, one of the things that we are going to do is link up with Evangelical Pastors that would be interested in meeting together for prayer. I would also like to supply them with some books for a personal library that will be for their benefit. There is a congregation in Tennessee that would like to partner with us in this endeavor. Below are the books, not including a commentary, Bible dictionary, and concordance, that Heart Cry Missionary Society supplies to their Pastor's network in Peru.

In addition to these, I would like to provide CD's of Paul Washer's sermons in Spanish. (Though some of the Pastors may not have access to a CD player.)

What do you all think about this idea? Is this something that we should pursue? I think that the books (without the commentaries, dictionary, and concordance) will cost about $40.00 per pastor.

The objectives for this trip would be:

That we would continue our relationship to the community, and concentrate on discipling the lady who professed faith in Christ during our last trip.
We would be a blessing to the missionaries that we are already familiar with (Steve and Robin Henry) by taking supplies for their medical clinic, praying with them, and encouraging them. (Or Youth Sunday School classes have adopted them as missionaries so they will be praying for them and will most likely have gifts to deliver to them as well.)
We would seek out evangelical Pastors in the area that would like to meet together for prayer and encouragement. Our hope would be to plan a meeting of preaching and praying together during our trip in the summer as an additional avenue of ministry for our teams.

Okay...I know that I have given you a lot of information here. What are your thoughts?

Sunday Morning Spanish Service - The Doctrine of the Church

Thank you for your recent requests to be "informed" on what all is going on in our Spanish service at Rockport. I have been preaching through the Gospel According to John on Sunday mornings, but we are going to take a break to discuss the Doctrine of the Church. It is important for us to do this because there is so many conflicting views, and we must look at a verse by verse study of the true church and what the Scripture says.

Below I have given you the English translation of what will be in the bulletin this Sunday.

And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Colossians 1:21-23 ESV

Many people have told me that they do not wish to “go to church” or belong to a certain “church” but they are “right with God” and that is all that matters. Sadly, these people are mistaken about what the church is, and what God’s desire is for his people.
“Church” is not something you “go to” but it is the name for the Bride of Christ, those whom He had redeemed. Therefore, it is incorrect to say that you are “right with God” and yet, you do not belong to the church. Do you see this?

Over the next few weeks we are going to take a break from our study in John to discuss an important topic, “What is the church.” We are going to look at some of the purposes, some of the responsibilities, joys, and struggles.

Paul gives a great description of who the church is. In Colossians 1:21-23 (quoted above) tells us that the “church” is the name for those people who:

Used to be alienated from Christ, dead in their sins.

Are now blameless before God because of God’s Sovereign work brought about by a new birth by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, by the preaching of the true gospel.

Are continuing, by the grace of God, in sanctification until death.

It is my prayer that through this study, we all might grow together in the grace of our Lord and have a better understanding of what it means to be called God’s people. To Him be the glory forever!

We had a great time worshiping in the Word last night. Bro. Paul Washer brought the Word from Matthew Chapter 5:1-2. Specifically he focused on the grace of God that would cause Him to "sit down, and open His mouth."

Prayer Requests

There are many requests that we have been praying over. For those who faithfully read this blog, I am going to ask you to put a few items on the front burner.

Pray for those who are in attendance. Specifically those who are here from Rockport (or with us) Cyndi, Rob, Robby, Aaron W., Irian, Brady, Stephanie, Molli, Maggi, Mayci, Marie, and, of course, me.
For those who could not make it. -- Rachel is home with Olivia...we think that Rachel has pneumonia. Pray for Jonathan. He is lost and doesn't care. Oh Lord, please...open his heart!
For the speakers, Jeff Noblitt, Paul Washer, and others.
For the Spanish Service at Rockport tomorrow. This past week we had someone from this service attend one of our Wednesday Night small groups. This was a great step. Irian has been helping me make visits over the past week, and he has done a great job.
Our upcoming Hispanic Ministry Meeting with some of the leaders from the Missouri Baptist Convention.
Our upcoming Spring Student Conference at Bates Creek Camp. (April 18-19, 2007) We need to find a Christ-honoring speaker for this event.
Our upcoming mission work to Mexico. Pray specifically for our team that will be going in February, that they might have success in finding Pastors that would be willing to get together during our trip in June and have Bible study, a time of prayer, and a time of teaching as well. Pray for the finances for several of our team members as there have been some changing in their situations, especially with employment.

I will walk with integrity of heart

5 Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly
I will destroy.
Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart

Tonight as I have been considering the word of the Lord, I was drawn to the Psalms and considering what has been said by the Lord for our own good. At the time, I must confess, that my heart was bent in the other direction than what David wrote as he was confessing the desire of his heart to walk in integrity.

What is integrity? Well, there are many different ways to define it. I have heard others give the explination that Integrity is "who you are when nobody else is looking." Webster defines it as "adherence to a special code of moral or artistic values." Well, you may know of other good ways of explaining this. After thinking about the meaning of integrity and reading this Psalm, here are some questions that I have for myself, I submit them to you for your benefit.

1. Are my thoughts those which think about the ways that are blameless? Am I thinking thoughts that allow me to talk to others, counsel others, preach to others, and guide others with a clear conscience? Do I consider, or dwell on heavenly things, or have I become preoccupied, not necessarily with the "things of the world" but have I shifted my thinking to unholy, selfish desires with which I would be ashamed to commit? If so, my thinking must be returned to the only one worthy of my full affections.

2. What are my thoughts regarding my "neighbors?" Do I recognize the disdain that God has for a "haughty eye" or a proud heart? When I consider evil the sinfulness of those around me, do I look upon them with a proud and arrogant heart, or do I look upon them with compassion. Pastors, do we speak the word of Christ, in love?

3. Am I seeking counsel from those whose way is the way of Christ? Do I consider what is influencing me and have I put away the counsel of the wicked for the wisdom of God?

Father,

You know the condition of my heart. You certainly know the thoughts and desires of this fallen, imperfect man. It is for this, that I cling to your grace to sustain me. Of all those times that I have tried to justify myself, I repent.

There is nothing in all this world that has ever existed other than the finished work of Jesus Christ that will satisfy Your wrath. Thank you for the free gift of Your son to pay the penalty for my sins. It is in this finished work that I trust, and am trusting both now and forever.

I ask that by Your word, I may consider the way that is blameless, renewing my mind and heart by the cleansing, refreshing words of Christ recorded in the Scriptures. Your word is sweet to my soul, correcting, teaching, and encouraging me. Renew me, and restore me, oh Lord my Rock, and my Redeemer.

Missouri Baptist Convention Pastor's Conference

I think that the following article says enough. Below you will find a post from a Missouri Baptist Pastor stating his views on the recent Pastor's conference at the Missouri Baptist Convention. This year featured Mark Dever speaking on the importance of preaching the Word. Specifically, the necessity of correct, sound, expository preaching.

I have taken out the name of the man that posted this "Letter to the Editor" in the MBC Pathway's article. My desire is not to point out the man that commented, but to give you, a picture of the sad state of the Southern Baptist Churches in our state. I pray that the Lord would bring revival in our state and we would recognize our need for preaching of the Gospel, and rallying behind the truth of the Scripture rather than "man-made" religion.

Pastors’ Conference did not live up to expectations

Sunday evening, Oct. 28, I set my alarm for 5 a.m., excited about the anticipated blessing I would receive by attending the 2007 Pastors’ Conference. I go to the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) annual meeting every year as part of my job as pastor, to allow my church to participate in decisions made at the MBC and receive information I can take back to them about the ministries they generously support through their gifts to the Cooperative Program. But I go to the Pastors’ Conference for me. I love the MBC Pastors’ Conference and the spiritual lift I receive every year hearing sermons designed for where I live by fellow Missouri pastors, as well as pastors from other parts of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Imagine my surprise to discover this year’s Pastors’ Conference had been hijacked. Instead of being blessed by fiery sermons encouraging me in my struggles as pastor and challenging me to be more committed to Christ as I lead my church, I arrived a bit weary from my three-hour road trip to hear a couple of lectures on expository preaching, with the promise of more to come.

When time came to receive the offering, I left the Pastors’ Conference feeling betrayed instead of blessed by the “infomercial” on expository preaching that was substituted for the typical Pastors’ Conference. I did not return.

Who asked for this? Why the sudden change in direction? Can I please have my Pastors’ Conference back? I am certain the presenters had many good things to say about expository preaching. So sign them up for a MBC-sponsored touring conference on expository preaching and let pastors come who want to receive their seminar teachings. I may even come. But, please, return the Pastors’ Conference next year back to a format that will provide encouraging and inspirational preaching worth getting up at 5 a.m. to receive.

Do you see the danger in this sort of mentality? Can you believe that there would be such a comment about this? Sadly, here in our state, like much of the world now, we are focussed on easy-believism, how can we grow our church, and worldly agendas rather than the Gospel.

What do we do with "Adultolescents?"

I recently received an e-mail from our church's website from a young lady, in her twenties...looking for a "youth group" that she could connect with while attending college in St. Louis. Her request was for a group of people who like to "hang out" and have many activities. Hmmm...sadly, I think that this is the mindset of so many people that think of what church "ought to be." It seems as if there is a never-ending resounding of voices saying "when I was in the 'youth group' we did...", etc.

I am afraid that congregations all over America are continuing to follow the trend of society. We keep babysitting adults, prolonging childhood, and "entertaining goats rather than feeding sheep". (Yes, that quote was from Charles Spurgeon).

What do we say in response to this? How do we instruct young people today regarding things such as marriage, discipleship, financial responsibility, etc.? I was reading a recent article by John Piper, and thought that it was worth while...so I have pasted it below. Feel free to comment!

A Church-Based Hope for “Adultolescents”

Christian Smith, professor of sociology at Notre Dame, wrote in the most recent Books and Culture a revie w of six books that deal with the new phenomenon of “adultolescence”—that is, the postponement of adulthood into the thirties. I want to relate this phenomenon to the church. But first here is a summary from Smith’s article of what it is and how it came about.
What Is Adultolescence?
Smith writes,

“Teenager” and “adolescence” as representing a distinct stage of life were very much 20th-century inventions, brought into being by changes in mass education, child labor laws, urbanization and suburbanization, mass consumerism, and the media. Similarly, a new, distinct, and important stage in life, situated between the teenage years and full-fledged adulthood, has emerged in our culture in recent decades—reshaping the meaning of self, youth, relationships, and life commitments as well as a variety of behaviors and dispositions among the young.

What has emerged from this new situation has been variously labeled “extended adolescence,” “youthhood,” “adultolescence,” “young adulthood,” the “twenty-somethings,” and “emerging adulthood.”

One way of describing this group is to highlight the tendency to delay adulthood or stay in the
youth mindset longer than we used to. Smith suggests the following causes for this delay in arriving at mature, responsible adulthood.

First is the growth of higher education. The GI Bill, changes in the American economy, and government subsidizing of community colleges and state universities led in the second half of the last century to a dramatic rise in the number of high school graduates going on to college and university. More recently, many feel pressured—in pursuit of the American dream—to add years of graduate school education on top of their bachelor’s degree. As a result, a huge proportion of American youth are no longer stopping school and beginning stable careers at age 18 but are extending their formal schooling well into their twenties. And those who are aiming to join America's professional and knowledge classes—those who most powerfully shape our culture and society—are continuing in graduate and professional school programs often up until their thirties.

A second and related social change crucial to the rise of emerging adulthood is the delay of marriage by American youth over the last decades. Between 1950 and 2000, the median age of first marriage for women rose from 20 to 25 years old. For men during that same time the median age rose from 22 to 27 years old. The sharpest increase for both took place after 1970. Half a century ago, many young people were anxious to get out of high school, marry, settle down, have children, and start a long-term career. But many youth today, especially but not exclusively men, face almost a decade between high school graduation and marriage to spend exploring life's many options in unprecedented freedom.

A third major social transformation contributing to the rise of emerging adulthood as a distinct life phase concerns changes in the American and global economy that undermine stable, lifelong careers and replace them instead with careers of lower security, more frequent job changes, and an ongoing need for new training and education. Most young people today know they need to approach their careers with a variety of skills, maximal flexibility, and readiness to re tool as needed. That itself pushes youth toward extended schooling, delay of marriage, and, arguably, a general psychological orientation of maximizing options and postponing commitments.

Finally, and in part as a response to all of the above, parents of today’s youth, aware of the resources often required to succeed, seem increasingly willing to extend financial and other support to their children, well into their twenties and even into their early thirties.

The characteristics of the 18-30 year-olds that these four factors produce include:
(1) identity exploration, (2) instability, (3) focus on self, (4) feeling in limbo, in transition, in-between, and (5) sense of possibilities, opportunities, and unparalleled hope. These, of course, are also often accompanied by big doses of transience, confusion, anxiety, self-obsession, melodrama, conflict, and disappointment.

How Should the Church Respond?
How might the church respond to this phenomenon in our culture? Here are my suggestions.

1. The church will encourage maturity, not the opposite. “Do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature” (1 Corinthians 4:20).

2. The church will press the fact that maturity is not a function of being out of school but is possible to develop while in school.

3. While celebrating the call to life long singleness, the church will not encourage those who don’t have the cal to wait till late in their twenties or thirties to marry, even if it means marrying while in school.

4. The church will foster flexibility in life through living by faith and resist the notion that learning to be professionally flexible must happen through a decade of experimentation.

5. The church will help parents prepare their youth for independent financial living by age 22 or sooner, where disabilities do not prevent.

6. The church will provide a stability and steadiness in life for young adults who find a significant identity there.

7. The church will provide inspiring, worldview-forming teaching week in and week out that will deepen the mature mind.

8. The church will provide a web of serious, maturing relationships.

9. The church will be a corporate communion of believers with God in his word and his ordinances that provide a regular experience of universal significance.

10. The church will be a beacon of truth that helps young adults keep their bearings in the uncertainties of cultural fog and riptides.

11. The church will regularly sound the trumpet for young adults that Christ is Lord of their lives and that they are not dependent on mom and dad for ultimate guidance.

12. The church will provide leadership and service roles that call for the responsibility of maturity in the young adults who fill them.

13. The church will continually clarify and encourage a God-centered perspective on college and grad school and career development.

14. The church will lift up the incentives and values of chaste and holy singleness, as well as faithful and holy marriage.

15. The church will relentlessly extol the maturing and strengthening effects of the only infallible life charter for young adults, the Bible.

In these ways, I pray that the Lord Jesus, through his church, will nurture a provocative and compelling cultural alternative among our “emerging adults.” This counter-cultural band will have more stability, clearer identity, deeper wisdom, Christ-dependent flexibility, an orientation on the good of others not just themselves, a readiness to bear responsibility and not just demand rights, an expectation that they will suffer without returning evil for evil, an awareness that life is short and after that comes judgment, and a bent to defer gratification till heaven if necessary so as to do maximum good and not forfeit final joy in God.

Salvation comes to Centenario

I am typing this from the United States in Harlingen, Texas. We are looking forward to returning this evening sometime. Thank you dear for updating everyone while we were gone.

We finished our last day in Centenario by attending a church service at Iglesia Bautista del Buen Pastor in a nearby city, San Juan. This is also the congregation that Steve and Robyn Henry as well as Chris Berger attends. This is a very small congregation, but the service was great and we enjoyed worshiping with them. Edgar, one of the boys from the village, on the left, went with us. When we returned, he told us that he was interested in knowing Christ, we discussed this with him further as well as prayed with him. At the end of the day we had further discussion with him and told him that when we return, we would like for him to come to us the first day and we would like to teach him more about what it means to be a follower of Christ.

Rachel is correct in what she reported about Carmen. Our team felt it necessary to follow up with her again before we left. I shared with her from Matthew 13:44 and Christ the treasure of our lives. It was great to have a large field close by to illustrate the message of this verse. I asked her again to share with us in her words what she believed happened the other day when we visited her. In summary, she told us that though she understands that she does not have a job, her husband has a hard time finding work to do, they don't own their own home, she has been trusting in the ability to be able to "hold things together financially." She has been trusting in the tradition of Catholicism, and the saint that was around her neck. She told us that many groups had been in the area before, and there are several Mormon groups as well as Seventh Day Adventist. She also told us that she had heard the message that we shared with her before, however for the first time, she said that she believes and that Christ is her Lord, Savior, and King. Praise the Lord!!! We ended our time with her praying and rejoicing and telling her that when we return, our primary goal is going to be to disciple her and teach her from the scriptures.

There is more that I am going to write about our visit to Centenario, however there are others waiting for the computer now...so I must go. John, I want to thank you for your generosity. I am looking forward to future ministry opportunities together! For those who do not know, pray for another avenue of ministry that we pray that the Lord will develop. We are praying the Lord will expand this ministry to assisting and teaching Pastors and church leaders who do not have access to sound teaching and instruction.

Latest Word

Well, I spoke with Aaron briefly today. Things are still going well.

A few matters of prayer:

First, that they would manage their time wisely on Sunday, and make the most of the last full day that they will be there. To my understanding, they are taking a few of the teenage/young men to a church a little ways away. I'm not sure what the plan will be after that.

Sencond, Carmen, who is the lady that always does the cooking for our group, has made a profession of faith. After hearing the gospel, she said "I want this to be my testimony that I believe in Jesus, and nobody else...", and then she ripped the "saint" from around her neck and asked them to get rid of it. Aaron said that the necklace appeared to have been fairly expensive. It represented her dead ancestors and was the virgin holding a baby. Idolatry of this type is very serious to them, and this was a great testimony. Carmen is very sick, and her health is declining quickly. Please pray that the Lord would use her in the lives of her family members, that they too might be saved.

Third, for a few window A/C units. The school is apparently trying to get their hands on a few window units for two rooms. Aaron asked that we make this a matter of prayer.

Fourth, one of the boys, Daniel, who was very inquisitive over the summer, and who Aaron had come to be friends with, has seemed a little stand offish. Aaron was hoping to meet with him this evening, but I never received further report on that. Pray that the Lord would open his eyes that he might be saved.

Well, I guess that's all for now. I don't have any pictures to post yet...Aaron tried to send them, but I think the signal would not hold long enough for them to go through.

First Report

Hello there...it's me, Rachel. It is late, so I hope that I remember everything I am supposed to report!

First of all, Aaron, Rick, and Robby were supposed to have a layover in Houston for 3 hours...however, they were able to catch an earlier flight at no additional cost. They were only at the Houston airport for about 30 min if I understand correctly.

Then, they got to the car rental joint....Advantage in Harlingen, TX, if you need a good van rental into Mexico...anyway, there was supposed to be an upcharge of $26 per day for taking the van into Mexico. Advantage decided not to charge them the extra, Praise the Lord! That saved them over $100.

For those of you who don't know, Connie Reinhold was able to send a large amount of medical supplies with our team. The hospital that she works in provided them as a donation. THANK YOU CONNIE! I spoke to Aaron this evening, and they had stopped in La Posa to drop off the medical supplies to the nurse. There is always a great need for vitamins. It just so happened that Robin, the nurse, had run out, and of course, there were lots and lots of vitamins in the goodies that Connie was able to send! I'm sure you can imagine the excitement (and drama) in Aaron's voice rejoicing in how the Lord provided!

The last time I heard from Aaron, it was about 10:00 pm. They had just gotten done setting up camp, & meeting with the boys that were awaiting their arrival. Aaron said that once again, it seems that the Lord has gone before them in each step of the way thus far. Duh!

Anyhow, I'm sure that I'm forgetting something, but you'll have to forgive me!

Oh yes, and Pastor Ruben Moreno, who had been feeling ill, and said he would definitely not be able to make the trip.....he met up with them this morning...and is in Mexico!

Mission to Centenario this Weekend

We are just a few hours from boarding the plane that will take us to southern Texas to spend the night and enter Mexico on Friday morning. I am going to include some specific areas where you can be praying for us in the next few days.

Our trip over the summer ended with the discussion of why we do not believe in the Virgin of Guadalupe. We also had a closing time with the people and shared with the community why we labor in making frequent trips to their village. The message was plain and simple, "that they may believe in Christ, and by believing in Him, have life in His Name."

Therefore, our primary goal with this small group is to follow up on the question, "If we do not believe in the Virgin of Guadalupe, then who do we believe?" This is going to be accomplished by small group discussions and individual conversations.

I would ask that you please pray about these details. Should their be people saved, our focus will immediately be discipleship and future missions would be to encourage these new believers, teaching them and walking with them as the Lord builds a community of believers. (I am getting chills just thinking about this!)

We are also going to have a storage facility available in southern Texas , and this will be a huge blessing. It will be great to have the ability to have people send supplies to a direct address in Texas and we will also be able to store items that cause problems for us to transport by airplane (tents, storage containers, etc.)

I ask you to please set aside some family time this weekend to be praying for us. Pray about the Lord's work in these areas and for wisdom as how to continue. Pray for the groups that are forming for next summer. We need people that are gifted in the areas of hospitality, evangelism, teaching, light construction (if necessary), recreation, and many other areas. We specifically could use those of you who are older than 30 years old!!!

Thank you so much for supporting these missions in the past and for your current support. We looking forward to giving report to the congregation upon our return. We will be sharing some of the information during our Spanish service at 8:00am on November 18^th

Rachel is going to help keep everyone updated by keeping in touch with us while in Mexico. We will be sending more specific prayer requests, pictures, and testimony.

Finally, pray for permanent missionaries to this area. Pray for the people at To Every Tribe. I am specifically praying that Lord would supply their needs, and that He might provide laborers to go to the field to harvest! To God be the Glory!!!

A comment on the ugliness of sin

Recently there have been some instances of public, deliberate sin among some of the people that I know. Some of this has been very difficult to deal with as they have just been a constant reminder that they, just like me, are not immune to the sin the crouches at the door and desires to have us. This has also required me to rethink my own heart, mind, and intentions and consider my life. After considering this, I am reminded of what Jonathan Edwards said in one of his resolutions:

Resolved, to act, in all respects, both speaking and doing, as if nobody had been so vile as I, and as if I had committed the same sins, or had the same infirmities or failings as others; and that I will let the knowledge of their failings promote nothing but shame in myself, and prove only an occasion of my confessing my own sins and misery to God.

Thinking upon this, and hearing about the great disappointments lately have caused me to say, "Lord have mercy on me, a sinner." We all must realize (I am emphasizing my need) that when we confront sin in others, that we ourselves are in danger of falling in to the same sin or even worse. Therefore, watch yourselves. As I am reading the book, "The Lord's Supper" by Thomas Watson, I find some passages that aid me in thinking about the severity and the stench of sin.

If a woman saw that sword which killed her husband, how hateful would the sight of it be to her! Do we count that sin light,k which made Christ's soul "exceeding sorrowful unto death" (Mark 14:24)? Can that be our joy, which made the Lord Jesus Christ "a man of sorrows" (Isa. 53:3)? Did he cry out, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Matt. 27:46? And shall not those sins be forsaken by us, which made Christ himself forsaken? Oh let us look upon sin with indignation....Sin has pierced and gored our Saviour: let it die the death. What a pity it is that that should live which would not suffer Christ to live. (29) Emphasis added.

Mexico Missions Initiative - Summer 2008

The Deadline for registration and payment of deposits is December 16, 2007.

DG Conference 2007

Messages from the Conference:

John MacArthur, keynote speaker for this year's DG conference, brought great messages on essential to persevering in the ministry. The main text that he taught from was 2 Corinthians 4:1-9

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

Some points of impact for me:

The call to radical personal holiness and the training of a biblically informed conscience. MacArthur explained that the conscience is for the soul as pain is for the body. Pain is a very good thing because without it we might allow ourselves to die because we would not understand some of the danger of our actions or what is being done to us. The same way the conscience is for the soul. It is dangerous to sin against it, likewise we are foolish to think that we do not have to educate and train it with the Word of Christ.
I commend to you his teaching on the treasure in "jars of clay." What a great message on the treasure of the gospel, planted in us, these breakable, dispensable, ugly, jars.

Conversation with John

Before the conference began, I received an e-mail from a man who stumbled upon this blog and wanted to get together to discuss missions in Mexico as well as theological training for leaders in that country. We later discovered that we would both be attending the Desiring God conference! So we met for coffee and I must tell you, it is great to see what the Lord is doing in this brother's life.

We both share a common interest in seeing leaders trained to correctly handle the Word! Would you join us in praying toward this? First, that there would be people saved in these areas. Second, that the Lord would set apart leaders for His people. Finally, that there would be some of us that would stop using the argument that "there must be people closer and more qualified to go" as a reason to not devote time, energy, and resources to this area.

John, if you read this, I want you to know that appreciate our short time together during the conference and I look forward to speaking with you more in the future!!!

Why Do You Believe- remix

I came from the upbringing of “cheap grace” and an era of “preachers” heralding from the pulpits, “ask Jesus into your heart” and make Him your Savior, and you will not go to hell. Then, we would hear testimony of so many that would say, “I made Jesus my Savior at age 6 at VBS, but did not make him Lord until I was 27 and almost died in an automobile accident.”

Sadly, this teaching has permeated the pulpits across denominational lines, and continues to do so even today. The message of “salvation” for most is nothing more than a great humanitarian effort rather than the reality of fleeing from the wrath of God and embracing Christ because he is worthy.

What has been the effect? Well, quite simply we are seeing generation after generation that say that they love God with their lips (when they are around other Christians), but yet their hearts are far from him. I hear of so many today that believe that they are going to heaven because of a “decision” that they made so many years ago, and they quote scripture out of context to support this claim, and they are deceiving themselves to think that “everything will be okay in the end.”

It reminds me of the Scripture in Isaiah 29:

13 And the Lord said:
“Because this people draw near with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
while their hearts are far from me,
and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
14 therefore, behold, I will again
do wonderful things with this people,
with wonder upon wonder;
and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”

My friend, I pray that you might watch this video and that you might consider why you believe. Consider whether or not you are born-again. If not, repent and believe, do not continue to believe the lie. If you are born-again, then proclaim this gospel to others that they to may believe and be saved.

I praise the Lord for the ministry of Heartcry Missionary Society and the preaching ministry of Paul Washer.

Latest Update on many things...

Mission trip in November

We will be leaving for Mexico on the weekend of November 9th. This will be a short-term trip, only about 3-4 days, but we have a specific agenda that we are going to be keeping (Lord willing). Please pray for those whom we already have contact with. Last night I spoke with Daniel, a 14 year-old young man whom we all got to know very well this past summer. He is looking forward to our group's return to Centenario. Our goal is going to be to have individual conversations with every person that we have a relationship with in this small village.

How can you pray? Here are just a few to mention:

Much needed funds for the trip. In addition to our own expenses for airfare, etc., an extra $600.00 would provide us a rental vehicle with insurance, meals, and supplies.

Pray for those who are considering going. I am really praying that my dear brother Ken will be able to go with us. Pray that the Lord would move some things around so that he might be able to minister there as well.

There are a couple of young men that are considering this trip. I pray that this would be a time for them to share the gospel with other young men in this village, but I pray that this might be a time of growing and maturing in their lives as well.

Pray for future missions endeavors to this area. We desire to have full time missionaries in this area and we are asking the Lord to raise up these people and that they might receive the training they need and go!

Update on our Worship Service in Spanish

We had a new couple attend this past Sunday! We had a total of 14 in attendance, and some of the people who have attended in the past, did not show up! Please continue to pray for this ministry and that the Lord would continue to grow his church. Our new couple this week asked if we would consider having a Sunday School class following our morning service. We are in desperate need of another teacher that can speak fluent Spanish.

We are also working at putting together a worship band. We already have 4 people that will be playing on a regular basis.

Update on Dad

Dad is home from the hospital now. He is resting and recuperating at our apartment here in St. Louis. Thank you all for your support and prayer. In about 6 weeks, dad will begin the radiation therapy.

Missions Report to the Jefferson Baptist Association

It was an honor to speak at the annual meeting of the Jefferson Baptist Association. Granted, I didn't really get the opportunity to "preach", but I did get the opportunity to share just a little bit of what the Lord had impressed on my heart regarding missions, and specifically those missions to the Hispanic community in and around Jefferson County, Missouri, as well as mission endeavors to the country of Mexico.

First, I would like to mention that if your measure of success in ministry is attendance or hype, then you would not consider our ministry to the Spanish-speaking community a success. However, I am so thankful that the Lord is still making His name great, despite the language barrier, and in the face of many other cultural obstacles.

In this meeting, I mentioned two major points that I felt needed to be covered at the time. I will post the full report at a later date. However, these points were not all that I could think of, but mainly because I was given such a short time, there was no opportunity for expounding.

Why is God serious about missions in Jefferson County, Missouri? Because God is serious about His glory! Why should we be serious about missions to unreached people groups in Jefferson County, Missouri? Because God is serious about His glory! Given all that was going on in the days of Malachi, look at what God said about His glory...(Malachi 1 ESV)

11For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name will be great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts.

14b I am a great King, says the LORD of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.

Obviously you could continue to quote many other passages, Isaiah 48, etc. However, what a great picture that this gives us about God being serious about His name being great among the nations! That was my charge to our association, that God's name would be made great among the nations.

Second, that our appetites would be whet for missions, specifically to unreached people groups, both local and global because we have the promise of God that there will be people saved! Looking at the Scripture again in Revelation 7

9After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10and crying out with a loud voice,"Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" 11And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen."

When we preach the gospel, we can know that there will be a representative of every tribe, tongue, and nation that will one day stand with us before the throne of God! That is the promise that we have when we preach the gospel. It is not because of our best efforts, but because of the promise of God!!! (Of course, I am not saying that we should not put forth our best efforts).

However, when we preach, we should preach for the Glory of God. Everything else, though it may be important, is a secondary issue. Feeding people, disaster relief, etc., are all very important, very necessary, and indeed is the intent behind "loving your neighbor as yourself", however we must do these things in the proper perspective. We do these things as an overflow of Christ in us, working in us, to do good works which he prepared in advance for us to do.

There is much more to come on this topic and a larger report on my speech to the Jefferson Baptist Association. However, let me leave you with this resource. I would like to suggest a sermon that will stir your heart. It is sermon on missions and ministry. The sermon is by the great Paris Reidhead. It is entitled "Ten Shekels and a Shirt." (I have not viewed this entire website, so I am only going to endorse the sermon audio at the link I have included.

A few updates from the Hospital

Update on Dad 9/7/2007

Dad has been up and sitting in his chair. He asked me to take some pictures and pass them along to everyone! He is looking so much better and is sounding really good! I got to hear him speak last night and that was very encouraging. I spoke with mom on the phone this morning and found out that the doctors saw dad this morning and capped his traech tube, which is allowing him now to speak easier.

Thank you again for all of those who have sent cards, made visits, etc. They have been much appreciated. Please continue to pray for mom and dad as they have a long recovery together in the future. As it stands right now he may be in the hospital for several more days because the doctors would like for him to walk around the building and see how he responds to this.

There are some more prayer requests to pass along. The doctors did notice an irregular heart beat last night. They also reported one while he was in intensive care, therefore they are going to run some testing to ensure that this is not a problem. It very well could be just a response from the pain.

For those who are new to reading the blog, or for those who have not had a chance to read this article, I would like to share with you a wonderful piece for you to read regarding the glory of God in cancer. It is an article by John Piper, and it is entitled "Don't Waste Your Cancer." I beg you to please read this article, I believe that it will benefit you greatly.

A man named "Adam"

While we were in the surgery waiting room on Thursday, I met a man named "Phil" who was waiting while his young son was in surgery. We would later find out that he would be in the same Intensive Care Unit. On Monday I went to the Intensive care unit and could not find Phil, but I did find his sister-in law and visited with her. She told me that Phil had explained that I had been coming by to pray with them. She explained to me that she is concerned that Phil would not leave the hospital, most likely because five months ago his wife died suddenly at the hospital while he was away for lunch. She had undiagnosed cancer and died shortly after being admitted. She went on to tell me that she just wanted Adam to be able to open his eyes because he has been in a coma for over two weeks. So, I prayed with Adam and asked the Lord to open his eyes, prayed for the family, and asked God to show the family that He is more than worthy of their praise. After this, I left for lunch.

Upon returning from lunch, I visited with mom and dad for a moment. When the nurses came in to do some work on dad, I stepped out and went to the ICU unit to see if I could catch up with Phil before I left the hospital. I picked up the hospital phone to call the unit and asked to visit with Phil and Adam. Moments later, the unit doors flung open wide, Phil was briskly walking toward the doors motioning for me to come back. He grabbed my arm and began explaining to me that his sister-in-law told him that two minutes after I left, Adam opened his eyes and has been alert ever since! Praise the Lord! Please do pray for this family that I might be able to clearly communicate the gospel to them. I have been sharing with them little by little.

Update on Dad

Well, it's Friday now, and we are getting things together for a visit today at the ICU. Dad came through surgery last night just fine. Actually, the doctor was very impressed with how well the surgery went. We were at the hospital from 4:20am until 11:00pm. It was a very long day.

After the doctor explained how well the surgery went, he explained a serious concern of his. When they were inside testing the cells for cancer, they found a positive hit on a nerve and a blood vessel. The removed what they could, and traced it all the way to the base of the skull. When they ran tests there, it was still positive. So, the doctor says that this finding is serious. Most likely the cancer is on the other side of the skull. However, he did say that they have it located and that they will be able to focus radiation therapy to this area in an attempt to eradicate it.

Thank you all so much for praying. Please continue to pray for mom. It was very difficult for her to see him in the ICU after the surgery. Today they are going to start weaning him off of the medication that is keeping him sedated and comatose. We will know more later on today.

If you haven't been able to you, please read the post below on the reflection on the airline flight. This is something that the Lord was brining to my mind as I was preparing for yesterday's surgery. My hope and trust never has been in the technology or the doctors. Don't get me wrong, the doctors that we have are wonderful. However, they have no authority over this situation other than what the Lord has given them. Therefore, join with me in asking the maker of Heaven and of Earth to heal dad. I also ask that the Lord would exalt himself make His Name great among our family.

Reflections from a Southwest Airlines Flight

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15.

On our return flight home from Mexico this past year, everything seemed normal on the flight. I have been on many flights both domestic and international. Our team was conversing with others throughout the cabin, we were eating Pizza that we just purchased, everything was "just normal." All of the sudden, the captain turned on that "fasten seat belt sign" and the flight attendant asked everyone to please return to their seats, fasten their seat belts, etc. This is pretty standard when you might have some turbulence...but then the captain came on the overhead speaker and told the flight attendants to return to their seats immediately and to fasten their seat belts. (This is...well...not so typical.) Okay...I was thinking, well...I've been through some significant turbulence before, this is going to be just fine. I actually had to use the restroom at the time and asked the flight attendant sitting in front of me if I could use the restroom if I was careful (again...standard practice). The flight attendant looked at me with a nervous look on her face and told me absolutely not, it is going to be really bad. (Hmmm...not so typical response.)

Sitting in the row behind me with members of our mission team, was an off-duty Southwest Airlines pilot talking. What happened next was a sudden drop about 500-1000 feet (estimate given by the guy sitting behind me.) The cabin shook, people went "whoooooooo." My heart started jumping. Yes, I'm okay with admitting that. I didn't really want to go down in a plane crash. I started thinking...why didn't I drive, why didn't we drive!!! I don't know why I think that somehow I have more control over my life when I am the one driving. I don't know why I am so arrogant to think that by worrying I can add an hour to my life. It certainly is illogical and unreasonable to think that you or I have any more control over our own life or death. (Don't read into this...just take it for what it is...I am not saying that you can cast off restraint, live like you want, because it doesn't matter...you would have to be a fool to believe that.) What I am saying is that it was silly of me to think for a second that God is not in control of absolutely everything that was going on around me and despite what comes, God will not be shaken, taken by surprise, and certainly will never be out of control. I can rest assured of this promise. I can also rest assured that life is precious, we are not guaranteed tomorrow, and that our lives are here today and they are gone tomorrow. Isn't that what the scripture says from the earlier quote in James? This kind lesson on the airplane brought me back to reality that I am not in control, and that at a split second, our life can be over, but God is Sovereign!

We are getting ready for another reality check just like this. No, I'm not getting on a plane this month, that's coming in November. However, this next event involves dad going in for cancer surgery. Tomorrow morning, in less than 24 hours from right now, he will be undergoing a 10-14 hour surgery to remove most of his tongue, replace it with tissue from somewhere else. He may have a bone replacement, he may die in the middle of surgery, he may have further complications, or they may find no cancer tomorrow. Nothing is certain other than God is on His throne. Though we may have the most skilled physicians and surgeons in the area, they can only do what is allowed and ordained by the Lord. Therefore, it would be foolish to place our faith and hope in anyone or anything else than the God who is there.

I know that no matter what the outcome of the surgery, the Lord's Name is worthy to be praised. Please to pray for my family tomorrow, please do pray that there will be no cancer, that would be incredible, but most importantly, pray that our faith may indeed be strengthened in Jesus Christ, our only hope both now and forever.

Thank you again to everyone who has sent cards, letters, and other correspondence. They have been greatly appreciated. Rachel and I will be posting updates on dad's condition throughout the surgery. Please understand that we will not be taking a lot of calls, and will be making even fewer during this time.

Trip to Thebes, Illinois and an update on Dad

This past weekend, Rachel, Olivia, and I made a trip to my hometown, Thebes, IL. Nothing much has changed since the last time, sure there has been some additions to the town, some more "small town controversies", but that was really about it. Something that strikes me in this small little town of 500, is poverty, houses falling apart, and kinds roaming the streets with no direction in life, little or no supervision or care. It's kind of sad if you think about it, because it is just a continuous lifestyle that many people in this area continue to live. This once thriving little town, formally the county seat for Alexander county, Illinois, now gone down hill in many areas, though there are some that do not fit this description.

It reminds me of how quickly our own hearts turn from that which is good, sufficient, satisfying, and turn to that which is harmful. This is no new problem, it has been going on for a long time. If we too are not careful, we will find our hearts wondering away from the truth of Christ and find ourselves wanting to have the "easy life" with no struggle, no responsibility, and the end will lead in destruction. Our entire culture has been infected by this lazy, lackadaisical mindset. Is some ways you can see this is the "effeminate slackness" in men in our society. We have just set back, and let things just happen. We have lived our lives with the philosophy of "'m ok, your okay and we will both be the same, if you stay out of my way." Sad...devastating.

Why am I saying all of this, well...my prayer for the village of Thebes is that they may turn to Christ. Pray for the ministry of the First Baptist Church and their Pastor Carl Fisher. Pray that in the midst of this small community that there would be a great awakening to truth and that the culture would be transformed as a result.

Update on Dad

Mom and Dad will be coming in to St. Louis today to settle in over the next few weeks. They would like me to thank all of those who have sent letters and cards of encouragement and exhortation. We will need your prayer and support over the next several months, because this is going to be one of the most, if not the most, difficult experience that we have gone through to this point.

Dad will go to the doctor tomorrow and have his final visit to prepare him for surgery. At 8:00am on Thursday, the doctor's will begin the 10-14 hour surgery. I will try to keep people updated on how things are going. I don't know how to say this any more lovingly than this, please check here for updates, because I am not sure how many phone calls that I will be making during this time. I hope that you all understand.

Following surgery, dad will be in the hospital for at least 2 weeks. (The doctor does not want him to remain there longer because of the risk of staff infections.) After this, mom and dad will remain with us for a while since they will have follow up visits.

Please pray for my family that will be here. There are several people who do not known Christ. They have never trusted in his loving kindness that has been extended to all who believe.

Missions, Mexico, 2008, Prayer request, Hurricane Dean...and more

First, the hurricane, if you didn't already know, is no longer expected to reach anywhere near the Mezquital region of Mexico. In fact, the area it did hit in Mexico is a very rural, unpopulated area where everyone evacuated. Praise the Lord!

On Sunday evening, I spoke with Daniel from Centenario. It was good to hear his voice and to visit with him. He, of course, wanted to know when we were going to return. I was very firm with him that I would not speak to that because I do not want to say something and then it not be able to come true. He understood. However, he did state that he is looking forward to our return. Please pray for this young man, my hope is that in November, I can have some time to speak with him further about the gospel. We had great discussion about the gospel over the summer, so the door is opened.

You said November?
Yes, please pray that the funds and the right airfare will come along because I will be making a return trip to Centenario the weekend of November 9, 2007. I have not explained this yet to Daniel or others in the area because I have not purchased the tickets or finalized the arrangements.

What about missions for next summer.
I had a great conversation with Rod Conner from To Every Tribe Ministries. I expressed our desire to bring two groups down during the summer next year, with the following changes. (This is a great new direction).

Our desire is to put together two teams of 25 people each
Each team will spend 1.5 days in Texas for training, teaching, praying, and we would like to have a tour of the School for Pioneer Church planting.
Each team will serve one full week in Mexico rather than 4 days.
We will do our own orientation and our own arrangements. There will be no day before and day after meetings.
We will also take teams down at various other times, as necessary, possible, and feasible.

So, I have two sets of dates that we are proposing for the trip next summer. They will be available very soon, so please check back! (I hope to have the dates posted this week, but next week at the latest). The application for consideration (new form) will be available online by this Friday, perhaps sooner.

How can you pray?

We need the participants for the trip.
We need financial assistance for those who have gifts that can be used, but yet are short on funds.
Pray for the people that we already know, that we will continue to work with. (Daniel, Ivar, Carlos, Mitchel, and others!)
Pray for the village "delegado" and the commissioner. Pray that we will continue to be welcome back to their village and that we might be a blessing to them.
Pray over the fact that many people are trapped by the lie of Catholicism. I understand that this statement might be offensive, however I don't know how else to explain it. It is quite possible that we will come in to conflict with others as we discuss this.
Pray that we will have the boldness to understand that the gospel is going to be an offense. People will be offended, but we should not shrink in fear or neglect preaching the whole counsel of God.
Did I mention, we need participants? Consider whether or not you have the gifts that are necessary for the trip. I will list them in a later post.

Hurricane Dean could be headed for familiar territory

The information include here is from the Nation Hurricane Center. The track of this storm leads to the most probably direct hit in the Mezquital region of Mexico.

This area includes the villages of Media Luna, La Poza, and Centenario. All of these villages are areas where we worked over the past three summers.

Please remember these people in prayer as they are preparing for what could be a devastating situation. Most areas are still not fully recovered from the great Hurricane that hit 2 years ago.

Also, Rachel and I have some friends are are located in downtown Cancun. We are going to try to contact them before time for the storm to hit that part of Mexico.

I will try to keep posts here as I get information. Though the map right now shows what could be a direct hit, things change at just a moment's notice. As in all things, the Lord is in control!

Report regarding Lima, Peru, and Heartcry Missionary Society

If you have not heard, there was a major earthquake that rocked the capital of Peru. Friends of our congregation Charles Leiter and Paul Washer were in this area when it hit. Below is an e-mail update from Charles' wife.

Charo Washer has received several emails this evening from her parents who live in Peru. They also emailed her the phone number of the hotel where the men with HeartCry are staying. Charo said I could call the hotel and that I should speak very slowly and clearly. I called the hotel (unsure as to whether they could even understand me) and they put me right through when I asked for Paul Washer. Paul said that they are all fine. They were in a taxi at the time of the earthquake and that the taxi began to move up and down and so did the street signs. It looked like the van behind them was trying to bump them. At that point they realized that they were in an earthquake. They got out of the taxi and stepped across the street away from the tall buildings (in case they would start to come down). The men were all in their rooms at the time of the phone call. Everything seems to be fine with all of them. Paul had been trying to call out, but had not been able to.

We are thanking and praising the Lord for this good report. The HeartCry conference in Lima started this past Monday morning and has been going well. Approximately 100 men are attending the conference and the theme is "Justification & Regeneration" . They are scheduled to start the second conference in a different city a few days from now. They will be flying in a small plane to get there. Please pray for continued safety, and for the communication from Lima to be restored. The men are to return to the United States, Friday, August 24th.

An update on some things....

First, for those who have been wondering about Dad's surgery...it will be August 30th. I want to personally thank everyone who has opened up their homes, and those who have written letters to my parents during this difficult time. This past Saturday we had a wonderful time with them because we were able to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

For those interested in the Hispanic Ministry in Arnold...please continue to pray that we might have more and more opportunities for evangelism throughout the week. Sunday we had our first family (husband, wife, and son) attend our 8:00am service!) We are very excited about this and we had two new contacts this week, so pray as we follow up with them.

In the area of Student Ministry, I am working with a few others in putting together a monthly gathering of high school/twenty something students. The purpose for this gathering would be for cooperate worship, teaching/preaching, prayer, and intelligent conversation. Not really sure how things are going to work out...but we are going to start with just one meeting...sometime in September...and see where things lead from there.

Finally, regarding missions to Mexico, I need you to pray for a group of us that have been traveling to and from Centenario, Mexico. Here is what is before us. We are considering how we will be involved in the future, and the financing for future trips. Our intent would not be to set up permanent residence, but to evangelize and train so that native inhabitants may then, in turn, lead the church and participate in future missions.

For now, we are looking for the teams and the finances for a weekend trip this fall, over the winter, and in the Spring. We have a team for the Spring, and we are looking now to set the date. For those who might be reading this and would like to be considered to be part of a missions team, you will soon be able to find an application for consideration on http://www.rockportbaptist.org. I hope to have it available sometime this week.

Here is what we know so far about my dad. I am going to choose to send out updates on my blog to help people be informed rather than sending out mass e-mails, phone calls, etc. There are just too many people to call, so I appreciate if you all could help us "spread the word" so that everyone knows how to pray.

Yesterday, we went to the specialist at St. Louis University Hospital. They completed a quick biopsy on the base of dad's tongue, and it came back positive for cancer. In the words of the doctor "this is not near as serious as prostate, colon, or lung cancer." However, the treatment options were as follows: we could do nothing, radiation and chemo and see what happens (with this option the radiation would kill his jaw bone and would have to be replaced...pretty bad idea), or surgery with minimal radiation therapy following the surgery. The latter is the option that we have chosen as a family. I say we, because it is up to mom and to dad but the rest of us stand behind their decision all of the way.

Dad is having a PET scan today to determine if the cancer has spread beyond the tongue/mouth area...the doctor doesn't believe so, but he will not consider treatment until he knows for sure. Second, dad must undergo some testing to determine if his body is fit for the 12-14 hour surgery that he is facing. He will loose 50% or more of his tongue. They will be doing tissue replacement from his leg...and perhaps some bone replacement. There is a 1/20 chance that the body will reject the tissue that is being replaced.

They will have to do a tracheotomy, he will have a feeding tube for a while. The doctor told us to prepare for a year, but he doesn't think that it should last over 7-10 days...just depending on his recovery.

Once he has been cleared for surgery, he will be scheduled. (I think that this will happen within 1-2 weeks.) We are hoping for sooner...and mom is convinced that it will happen next week.

Hmmm...well...this is not a road that I dreamed that I would be going down...but I know that my Redeemer lives...and I know that I have a great High Priest whose name is Jesus Christ and He shall supply sufficient grace in our time of need. (Hebrews 4).

I would like to encourage people reading this to consider two resources...first, an article written by John Piper. Oh how I wish that all of my family would read this article and see this cancer for what it is rather than look at this as something simply to defeat. I pray that my family my come to know Christ and be transformed by new life in Him! The article is entitled "Don't Waste Your Cancer." It was written by John Piper when he was diagnosed in 2006.

Second, the book by the late Pastor/Teacher Rodney Stortz. Listening to Rodney's sermons over the years has greatly touched my life and has given me great insight in to God's Word. Rodney died of cancer a few years ago, but before he died, he wrote a book entitled "Diary of a Cancer." Both items I suggest for your to benefit your soul and understanding of God's Sovereign will in the lives of His people.

Oh how I pray that someone might look at this article and find not me rambling on, but that someone might think for just a second "why aren't these people absolutely angry and bitter about this?" I pray that others might be stunned at the grace of God and because of this cancer, they might know that apart from Christ they stand is God's judgement. After realizing this they might see and know how wide, how long, how high, and how deep is the love of God in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 3:14-21)

Now, what is up with this title??? Well, I have to tell you...in the midst of all of the news of treatment, prognosis, possibility of death, etc., I saw my dad very serious and asked of the doctor a most interesting question. He looked at the doctor and said, "I have a question that I really need to ask you." I was thinking..."oh boy...here we go, this is where everyone is going to break down because we are going to talk about life support." Instead, Dad looked at the doctor and asked very seriously, "I just purchased two deer tags for the season coming in November, do you think that I ought to sell these?" The doctor looked at him and smiled, "If I were you, I would not sell those deer tags just yet, because I think that you will be ready for hunting by November."

My dad...

My family has been on a roller-coaster over the past year or so undergoing tests. He has been to several different specialists, treated for TMJ, been to dentists, neurologists, etc. Finally after almost 2 years of testing…his doctor has told him that apparently other doctors have been looking in the wrong area…it is s tumor under the tongue and he is very certain it is cancer.

My parents asked the doctor to make it plain to them and the doctor in Cape Girardeau has told him that he will defiantly loose his jaw bone and most, if not all of his tongue. He is also going to have to undergo chemotherapy.

My reaction? I know that that there will be times of overwhelming emotion very soon. However, I am asking for something specific. John Piper wrote an article entitled "Don't Waste Your Cancer" as he was undergoing treatment. Keeping this in mind, I would like to ask for prayer in this area.

First, of course, I am praying that this is not cancer, and when they come to the hospital next week (St. Louis University…thank you Rob and Kristi) the doctor confirm that it is a non-cancerous tumor. Secondly, I am praying that no matter what…the Lord will bring many in my family to a saving knowledge of Jesus.

Can I ask for a favor? Would it be possible for people to write notes of encouragement to my parents? Their names are Jim and Linda. I am praying that they might find strength and comfort in the Lord alone. I pray that the Lord might provide this time for them not to waste this opportunity to embrace the Sovereign Lord for help in our most desperate time of need.

More "traditional" Forms of Evangelism???

I must say, when I saw this article, I laughed at first, and then I will filled with sadness. Below you will find a excerpt from "Baptist Press News" from July 19, 2007.

LISBON, Portugal (BP)--What do missionaries do when serving in a
self-reliant urban location where the residents have little patience for gospel
tracts, EvangeCubes and other traditional forms of evangelism?

They find the nearest café, order espresso and a pastry, and spend time
getting to know one of the locals. Ideally, the small talk turns to spiritual
matters and presents an opportunity to share a personal testimony or even the
plan of salvation. But perhaps the conversation simply opens the door to a
deeper friendship, growing trust and future occasions to share the Word of
God.
A team of 14 LifeWay Christian Resources employees received a crash
course in this type of relational evangelism during a LifeWay-sponsored mission
trip to Lisbon, Portugal in June.
"It isn't traditional evangelism -- it's
just life," said Scott George, team leader for the International Mission Board's
Young Lisbon ministry and contact for the LifeWay team. "Our bread and butter is
the relationship and reaching the people that the church doesn't
reach."
Lisbonites, he added, take part in an average of 68 positive
spiritual conversations before they come to a relationship with Christ.

Now...I could just stop here because you probably already see the problem with this. What in the world are people talking about when they say that "gospel tracts" and "evangecubes" are "TRADITIONAL" forms of evangelism and that intelligent, relational conversation and commitment are somehow a new concept in reaching the loss.

Brothers and Sisters we are in a sad state. We have generations of people who don't even have a clue of what real evangelism is. What is worse, I am finding groups of people who consider themselves "conservative" and they are attacking people that are advocating for relational Biblical-approached evangelism.

I pray that there might be an explosion of real mission efforts that seek to take the Christ of the Scriptures to the hard places and proclaim him and not just an image on an "evangecube." May we be those who proclaim the whole counsel of God and proclaim a salvation due to the finished work of Christ!

The First Place

In a recent discussion with someone regarding church music, hymns, etc., I was reflecting on some of the good old hymns that we have been singing for quite some time now.

I find that there are some camps that are wanting to "throw away" the hymns and go with all new music and on the other hand there are those that absolutely refuse to recognize anything beyond the Baptist Hymnal or for some of the older folks out there, the Broadman hymnal. Even among these camps, I still find that there are those that will only recognize the 1956 version of the Baptist Hymnal, some the 1975, and then now...the 1995 update...etc.

There are many songs in all of these hymnals that need to be thrown out the window and we should repent that we would ever associate with such nonsense in the words. However, let me say...from someone who is still considered "younger" by most of my contemporaries...I will never forget or "throw away" some of the great hymns of old. (I'll explain more later.) On the other side, I joyfully embrace some of the new music that is being written today. Many of these new hymns and songs are written with greater doctrinal accuracy than hymns out of the hymn book.

Why will I not forget or "throw away" some of the hymns of old? When I reflect upon things that are lovely, right, and just, I think about some of the memories that are associated with some of these songs. For instance, I remember singing some of these songs at the testimony of conversion in people's lives. I remember singing some of these songs at a celebration service reflecting on the life of a recently past saint, etc. Not to mention that I will not throw away those songs which are sound theologically and make much of our Lord. (I could go on and on with this).

All of that said, I would like to introduce to you a song...it is a few years old, but I recently sang it at a Pastor's conference. I love this song because it goes right along with the title of the blog, but...more importantly because it focuses on the Preeminence of Christ above all things. I pray that you all might be blessed by reading the lyrics of this song.

Praise the Lord!!!

I received some great news today regarding my father. First, I would like to thank you all for praying for all of us over the past several weeks. It is evident that the Lord works mightily through the prayers of His people!

My mother called today to let me know that the follow-up MRI shows no tumor!!! Praise the Lord! The doctor stated that my dad has a condition where an artery is pushing down on a nerve and this is causing the symptoms that he has been experiencing. Therefore, the doctor believes that all treatment can be completed in Cape Girardeau, Missouri (the city where my parents work). He also believes that it is quite possible for the problem to be treated with medication!

I do thank the Lord also for the conversation that I was able to have with my father while he and mom were visiting us in the hospital. We were able to talk about the majesty and holiness of God. This lead in to a great discussion of God's plan and purpose for suffering and our command to trust in, and exult in the Lord our God. I have never had a discussion quite like this with him. I am so thankful for the Lord opening the door for this!

Praise the Lord!!

Coming Home on Monday!!!

I want to personally thank everyone for their prayer and support for all of us during Rachel's pregnancy. Thank you all for the gifts, visits, and time spent at the hospital. Praise the Lord...Rachel and Olivia get to come home from the hospital tomorrow!!!

Please continue to remember my father Jim in prayer. He is going to the neurologist tomorrow to find the results of his MRI from Friday. The plan is that he will be coming to Washing University Hospital for an extremely rare surgery on the back of his skull. This surgery is very risky and is going to difficult.

Rachel v2.0

This is Michael. Just got another update from Aaron about Rachel and Olivia, and everything's still going very well.

Aaron is still a little bit in shock, so I don't think the gravity has hit him yet ;)

There was a C-Section done because of complications which was fine. Also, a tumor was found which was easily removed. The doctor said that he's never seen a tumor of this kind that turned out to be cancerous but it's being sent to be biopsied anyway.

Olivia was 18 inches long, weighing in at 8 lbs. 9 oz. Everybody gets to leave on Monday and Rachel will be unhooked from a lot of the equipment she's on and be allowed to get on her feet sometime around noon.

All your prayers are appreciated through this. Thank you so much for all your support!

New Arrival

Hi folks, this is Michael. Aaron asked me to keep everybody updated on the birth of his baby girl, Olivia, since he's at the hospital.

Everything's going perfectly. Rachel was given the epidural at around noon today and was pretty loopy when I saw her. Fortunately, the medicine is limiting the pain with contractions.

Otherwise, I'm still in the dark. I'll post pictures as soon as I receive some.

Tonight we go to the hospital! We are really excited...but nervous...all at the same time. The hospital is going to call us when they are ready for us to come. When the baby arrives, we will post pictures here for all to see!!! (Thank you Terry for your help with this!!)

Please be in prayer for my father, Jim...well and also for my mother Linda. The doctor's have located a tumor in the back of his skull. Right now we do not know if it is cancerous. He is scheduled for an MRI in Cape Girardeau early Friday. He is going to be transfered next week to St. Louis to have surgery.

Please also continue to pray for Rick. The doctors are continuing to run tests, but as of this moment, they are not exactly certain what type of infection he has. At first the hospital thought he would be released today, but this is not likely.

Finally, please be in prayer for the meeting today with the Spanish Language mission.

Prayer Requests for Today

There are many things going on at this time...and I would like to fill everyone in so that you all may be in prayer.

First...please be in prayer for Rick. Since returning from Mexico he has been sick and has been in the hospital. Now, don't freak out because he is doing better and the doctor's believe that he contracted something viral from a mosquito while in Texas.

Second, please remember my father in prayer. For over a year now he has been having problems with his jaw. The doctors have been treating him for TMJ and this is not helping. After a visit with the specialist today he has an MRI scheduled for Friday morning and pending transfer to Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis. (He is facing potential surgery on his jawbone)

Rachel and I will be going in to the hospital tomorrow evening. If she does not go in to labor tomorrow evening then the doctor will induce her on Thursday morning. We are so excited! I cannot even begin to tell you all how we are feeling over this! Praise the Lord!

Please be in prayer for the Spanish Language ministry at Rockport. We have a brother from Honduras, his name is Manuel, and he is going to be assisting Daniel and I in the ministry here. He is searching for a permanent position as a Pastor somewhere in the United States. We are praying that perhaps he might be able to connect with a congregation in need of someone. Also pray because we need some people to help show him around the St. Louis area and take him to some Hispanic populated areas where he might make contacts for us.

Regarding our mission trip to Mexico I have several thoughts. Pray for those of us who sense an obligation now to the ministry there. Pray for the leaders and the students of To Every Tribe Ministries. Members from two congregations are really praying and seeking the Lord on how we might minister effectively and provide the necessary support to Centenario until a permanent missionary team can be placed there! To God be the Glory! (There is more to come on this issue.)

Finally, I would like to encourage you to read Bob Schembre's blog entry regarding worship. This is my dear brother in the faith. He and his precious wife have been such a blessing. His exposition on the scriptures will profit your soul. Brother, thank you so much for your years of service to the ministry of our Lord!

Update on Spanish-Language Ministry

For those who have been waiting for an update regarding the Spanish language ministry...here we go!!!

Please be in prayer for Pastor Manuel. He is coming to us today from Memphis, TN and has been working with Baptist Churches there. He is from Honduras and will be spending the next 6-7 weeks working with us at Rockport, with Paul Garcia, and hopefully also with Daniel Hernandez. What a blessing! We are receiving financial assistance from Jefferson Baptist Association as well as the Missouri Baptist Convention to help pay him while he is here! He will be residing with Kurt and Cindy Boehm.

We had another service yesterday morning at 8:00am. This is going to be our main focus throughout the time that Manuel is with us. Things are working well having me preach and Daniel to translate. However, I most likely will not be able to make it this week due to the fact that the baby will be coming this weekend! (Praise the Lord!!!)

I am very thankful that Scott mentioned the invitation for others to attend the service at 8:00am. If you are learning Spanish or already know Spanish, we invite you to join us in support of this ministry to the Hispanic community.

We have returned home. Our flight out of Houston was delayed about about an hour so...we arrived a little later than normal. The flight was also more "bumpy" than what we were all used to!

First, let me start by saying that I was surprised by all that the Lord did throughout our time together in Mexico. I was telling Ken White that I never would have imaged that this year would have been so amazing! It was incredible.

One of the highlights (and I will include more later), was the the meeting with the village president (Delegado) and the town commissioner. Accompanied by some of the older teenage boys of the town, Ken and I visited these men to discuss our presence within the community. I will telling you more about this later...however...I think that you might be interested to know that we received an official letter from the town requesting our frequent and immediate return! This is such an honor.

Terry's most recent comment couldn't have been more accurate. In his post he mentions exactly what we must consider...that is the consequence of what has been done thorough the work in Centenario, and also the work that has been done in the missionaries. Please be in prayer for many of us as we are struggling with this and seeking the Lord for direction.

It was once again a great pleasure and joy to work with To Every Tribe Ministries. Rod Conner brought much wisdom to our group, we were blessed to work with/for him.

Rachel, thank you for being the support behind me...thank you for allowing your hubby to be gone during this time. The Lord has used this time to benefit others as well as me. Thank you so much for keeping the folks here informed on the happenings!!!

Finally, I would like to think the congregation at Rockport for all of their support and prayer! The Lord has blessed us with a wonderful group of people who love the Lord, and love to see the Name of the Lord exalted throughout all the Earth!!!

Back in the States!

Just a little note to let you know that our missionaries are back in the U.S. They have had a wonderful time and can't wait to share with us! One piece of fabulous news is that Aaron was able to meet with the town president. Not only did the president have wonderful things to say about our group being there...he also gave a letter of invitation to return there any time! This is obviously a HUGE deal! I know there is a lot more to it than that, but that's all I have on it at this time.

Please remember to continue praying for our team, as they will be traveling back to Missouri tomorrow. They will arrive in Saint Louis at 2:25pm.

Did I mention that I am EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last Day in Centenario

Well, as you can see in the pic (behind Aaron & Carlos), our troops are packing up to come home. I don't have much news today, because I was not able to talk to Aaron last night. However, I spoke with him briefly in the morning yesterday, and he said they were already feeling extremely sad about having to leave today. Why must goodbye's be so difficult?!

This morning when they are done packing up, they will head back to the border. They will be able to stop in Matamoros for a little bit of shopping at the market. Then after getting back into Texas, they may still have time to head to South Padre Island for a swim in the ocean. Tonight they will have a meeting with the groups that were in the other towns, where they will be able to debrief and share what works the Lord has begun.

They will have to be at the airport in Harlingen at about 9am tomorrow, and will arrive in Saint Louis at 2:25 pm! I'm soooooo excited!!!!!

Please continue praying for safe travel!

Short post!

Well, here it is Tuesday night. I'm sure our team is feeling a little bit down that tomorrow is their last full day. Thursday morning will be spent packing up tents and loading the trailer to head back into Texas. They should be headed towards the border by about 10 or 11 am Thursday morning.

The only news I have received thus far today, is that things are still going just great! The "rumor" was true about Carmen and her Bible. She desperately needed some glasses so that she can spend more time reading...they were going to try and fit her with a pair today.

They had the opportunity to visit & perform the drama in the neighboring town, called Emiliano Zappata. This is yet another unreached area. Praise the Lord for this opportunity!

Aaron asked that you specifically pray for Daniel & Ivar. They are young men (17ish), who have been spending much time with a few from our group. Pray for their salvation!

This is a picture of Juana (left) and her daughter. Juana was one of the special ladies that we became close to last year. Every morning she made her special coffee for our group. We would walk across the street...and she would serve us using her finest dishes. What a sweet woman. Her mother was also living with her at the time, and was very ill. Juana took care of her...changing her, cleaning her, changing her bedding several times a day. What a chore. But she did it with much love and patience. Her mother passed away Wednesday...one week ago today. Please pray that even through the death of her dear mother, the Lord would show Himself to her...that she might be saved.

Pics & News from Centenario, Mexico

FINALLY! As many of you know, I heard from my most wonderful husband Sunday evening. And those of you who know me, know that I was ecstatic! He gave a wonderful report on what has been happening thus far.

When they first pulled into Centenario, they had quite the welcome! Half of the town was waiting for them at the school grounds. Aaron said it was overwhelming! Gee, I wish I could've been there!!!

The team is once again stationed on the school grounds, just like last year. This is just what we had been praying for. They are right in the center of the town, and within walking distance of almost every home. Also, as you will see in some of the pictures, there is a building that they are able to use for Bible school and other teaching times.

Aaron said that they have been blessed with glorious weather! Although it has been hot, there has been continuous cloud cover, and a constant breeze. Also, they have been getting rain showers off and on...just enough to keep the dust under control. This may sound silly, but it is quite a blessing!

Now for the really exciting news! Last year, our cooks name was Carmen. She is an older lady that is very well known in the town. We were able to provide her with a Bible in her language. She seemed very thankful & excited. The "rumor" is that she began reading the scripture and has become very curious. She then passed the Bible to her husband...who is now also wanting to learn more. I say that this is a rumor, because Aaron had not yet had a chance to meet with them and discuss, but had only heard this news from another individual. He and a few others were to meet with Carmen and her husband today. What kind of work is the Lord doing? I can't wait to hear the details!!!!!

Here are a few pics from the first drama performance. It seems that sometimes "drama productions" can be overrated and just a bunch of put on. But my prayer is that you can see what a tool the Freedom drama has been. The people, young and old, come from all over the town to watch and listen. Each time it is performed, one of the team members gives a personal testimony and short message about the saving grace of our God! What a wonderful opportunity! To my understanding, they will be doing the drama at least once each evening. And I also believe they are going to a neighboring town to share with them as well.

I can't wait to see if Aaron is able to send more pics tomorrow! I really enjoy being able to see what is going on there! Here are the rest of the pics that he sent today:

One other note, as you have heard so many times before, Mexicans LOVE soccer! This was used as a great outreach tool last year. Well, yesterday morning, the men from the town gathered together with our team for a great game of soccer! This provides a time to bond with the people and to earn the right to be heard when it comes to the Gospel! Because the men from the town can seem to be more resistant, this game can really help open doors! Praise the Lord!

Please make all of the above mentioned items a matter of prayer this week. It sounds as though the Lord is really working there in Centenario. What a joy for our people to be a part...and to be a part ourselves by lifting them up to our Great God in prayer!~

Someone asked what would be the best day to fast and pray. Aaron's response was that any day would be the best day! Wednesday is their last full day in Centenario, and will be the last opportunity to witness to the people that we have grown to love. They will have to pack up to leave early on Thursday...which will be very emotional!

Well, when I hear more, you will hear more!

A few pics from Matamoros, Mexico

Well, I'm not as wordy as my wonderful hubby when it comes to blogging, but while he is away, I will be trying to keep you posted with info and pics!

The last that I heard from our mission team (around 1pm), they were still in line at the border....and had been there quite some time. This can be soooo tiring! At about 4pm, Aaron sent these pics from his phone. The pics are from Matamoros which is the border town just on the other side of the checkpoint. The past 3 times that I have been to this area, it was dry as a bone! I can't imagine how much rain they must have been getting to cause this much flooding.

Tonight will have been a very busy night. Unloading trailers full of equipment...setting up 10 tents...greeting old friends in the village...preparing dinner...all of this after a very long, hot, uncomfortable wait at the border. They should have no problems sleeping tonight!

Please continue praying for our missionaries! A few specifics are as follows:

1. For a good night's rest in preparation for a very exhausting week.
2. That the Lord would open the hearts of those that our team comes in contact with.
3. That the Lord would draw our team members to Himself...that their focus would not be on the heat, the dirt, the bugs, or even one another...but solely on HIM!
4. As Aaron mentioned in his last post...that some of the teens in the village would be open to meeting together for a time of teaching.
5. That the Lord would use this time to call out a full time missionary from our group.
6. And on a selfish note, please pray that Olivia will wait for daddy to get home before she makes her grand entrance!

These are just a few of my thoughts and prayers....don't stop there!

Today is the day that we are headed out. We are loading up and will be crossing the border around noon today...please keep this in mind while you are praying throughout the day.

I received a phone call from Rueben Moreno from Corpus Christi. He and his wife are on their way to Matamoros this morning and they are going to stop by the hotel to pray with us! This is a great blessing!

I would like to present to you all one of our ideas in reaching out to the people of the village. We are going to see if there will be a few young people that would commit to letting us teach them in a small setting. If they are willing to do this and commit to this, we are going to give them a part in the drama as well. Then, we are going to have them travel with us to the other villages and do the drama. Please pray over this.

Just one more thought about the mission field. The man who spoke last night at our gathering has been a pastor for about 30 years. He has been through seminary and has had the experience of working the mission field in the United States throughout all of these years. However, he broke down and wept over the grace of God that has now allowed him to participate in missions to unreached people. He said that the Lord has changed his view...because he used to ask the question "why should I go?" He also challenged others to ask this very same question regarding missions. He said that after considering the great task of reaching the unreached people groups in the world, and in view of the mercy of God, we should instead ask "Why should I stay?"

O Lord, please put a passion within in us to have the same resolve. To go to the ends of the earth though it may cost us our very lives so that your Name may be proclaimed among the Nations. 'Till You return or call us home...grant us the privilege and the joy to take Your gospel to ends of the Earth! Blessed be the Lord God Almighty, Who was, and is, and is to come! Amen

Friday Evening Post

We just returned from orientation with the rest of the teams. We enjoyed a sweet time of prayer last night before bedtime and as I type right now we are preparing for another time this evening.

Parents...you especially will want to know that after today we will not have contact until we return back to the United States. However, you can check back here and we will have photos and information posted here.

Ken from our group said of the speaker during tonight's orientation...
I'm humbled and overwhelmed by that man who has 20-30 years of experience who was asked to give us a testimony of God's work. He shared his heart...with tears...and explained the Greatness of God and the excellent things that the Lord has done through the years during these mission experiences. He also exhorted those on the team to be unified and to recognize God's Sovereign work is no accident, but it was prepared in advance before the foundation of the world.

Regarding Tonight
It is a joy to work with To Every Tribe Missions. We are grateful for the work of David and Tommi Sitton and their commitment to spreading the gospel to the unreached people groups across the world. Please pray for their ministry as it is growing. We hear great success stories today regarding their school for church planting.

Thursday Evening Post

The picture above is our morning devotion time with Billy leading a session on God's Passion for a Pure people.

Today we settled our lesson plans, had some time to relax for a little bit, practice the drama, and we are getting ready to wind down for the day.

This evening Ken led us in a great lesson on the New Covenant in the blood of Jesus. After, the small groups met to discuss this and we are planning a prayer meeting tonight. After the small groups meet we are going to spend as much time necessary to seek the Lord and pray for his intervention to move us as a team and also to go before us to the ministry site in Mexico.

Our schedule for tomorrow will include morning devotion by Denny, followed by preparing of music. We have an afternoon session from Rick and the meeting with the other mission teams at a church in Los Fresnos. We will return to the hotel tomorrow night one last time before we head in to Mexico early Saturday morning. Parents - We will be calling you Saturday morning before we cross the border. After this point if you need to contact us in an emergency, please contact Rachel.

While we are in Mexico, Rachel will be helping me post information as I will be sending prayer requests and pictures live from Centenario and the rest of the Mezquital region.

Thursday Morning Update (Estamos aqui!!!)

We made it!!! We had no snags with our luggage, shuttle, flights, etc! Praise the Lord! After our meeting last night everyone went to bed to prepare for a very busy day!

On the way here, some of the kids (Billy, Lauren, Elizabeth, and Robby) had conversation with a fellow believer from McAllen, Tx. He and his family will be praying for us while we are in Mexico. Tom, if you are reading this, thank you for the time of fellowship and time of encouragement on the flight here!

So, what is on the agenda for today? Well, it is busy!!! We all woke up early...well...what some of them consider early...we are having quiet time followed by morning devotion. Please remember Billy in prayer as he will be leading today's morning devotion on God's passion for a pure people. Ken will be leading this evening's devotion on God's faithfulness when we are not.

We also made contact with a lady that works here at the hotel. She is going to check with a family member who works for the city of Harlingen to see if there is a way that we can do the drama in the middle of the city mall. She is going to check and let us know tomorrow morning! Please pray for this opportunity as well!

Today is going to be filled with practice, small group time in preparing lesson plans and purchasing supplies.

So, here are some specific areas where we are in need of prayer.

Silly little glitches with technology would not be a distraction for us or the people whom we serve.

Vamanos!!! (Part 2)

Well...today is the day...please be in prayer for our group as we head off for Harlingen, Tx. Our flights leave this afternoon.

Tonight's plan is to settle in the hotel, have a group session and plan for the next few days of training.

During this time...we will post entries here where you will find pictures as well as information from our day!

Before we leave, I want to share a little bit of God's grace and provision in the life of one of our team members. Now...I have always told those going should never let money alone be the factor to determine their participation. Here is just a small example of how the Lord works.

We had a team member that was lacking about $300.00 for their trip expenses. I wish that I could tell you that I was not stressed out about it...but that would be a lie. I was really wondering to the very few hours before the final decision had to be made. Well, then I received a phone call from someone wanting to come over and visit with us. Upon their departure they left with me a check for $300.00 for the mission trip. Hmmm...now...I should not be shocked by this...but once again I have been reminded of how great and how awesome the Lord is...and how he provides for his people!

Well...it's time to great ready to roll out! I'll check in tonight to let everyone know how we're doing!
